I've just been enjoying the heck out of the time they have given us to play classic. It felt like going home. But Here are some things I've noticed that are irritating. I had to turn off general chat because it was filled with rude and sexually explicit chat as well as anti semite jokes ( Not funny in any sense). People also for some reason find it necessary to group up and kite mobs away from others in the starting zones and low level Zones. Not cool. Other folks are there trying to level at the same time so be respectful. If you have to group up in the low level zones for anything other than an elite, you probably shouldn't be playing. If you have to speed level the whole game you should probably just stick with retail you can do it solo there.
I think I'll just skip the first few days so the rude unlearned and lack of etiquette folks will be moved on to their glorious dream of becoming the world famous person that hit 60 first in Classic WoW. Man what a lofty goal....not.

I get what you mean, there's always someone in chat that think they are funny, it felt like I was in twitch chat with just 'noise' instead of meaningful discussion or chat, but as you say, we can at least turn it off.

As for grouping, to be absolutely fair it was no different from the EU vanilla release, on February 12th (or was it 13th?) 2005 I started my journey in Deathknell, and it was packed! Bar the stupid jokes (people were just happy, pumped and hyped!) everyone was having difficulties finishing any quests, zombies, skeletons, bats, wolves always dead or tagged, so grouping up was a 'defence mechanism' to obviously increase your odds of tagging a mob, you know how it is; if someone else in the group kills it it still counts for you, so that behaviour is vanilla-release-like so to speak.

The additional bigger problem back then was the lag and disconnects, that bothered me more to be honest.

But yeah... Twitch chat.

Sadly there a lot of players with the maturity of a 7 year old playing WoW and there will be a lot more of them this time around because the servers are fresh and official. On every expansion launch and Private server launch it is the same, I think it has something to do with hype and adrenaline.

When you get to a certain stage in the game and you require other players help, they realise that all these lame communism, Trump and Hitler jokes they told in trade chat, make them a known player that other players tend to avoid.
They were everywhere on BFA too, it can't be avoided.

I'm all about no changes in classic, but I would love a larger ignore list on the social tab, 'cause we all know how bad this is going to get for a while xD

If you're going to complain that people group up in an MMORPG, you probably should be playing single player RPGs.

LOL not the point though. It's the way they were doing it and being rude to others. I just sat back and watched what they were doing. At least I know to wait a few days to a week before getting into the game and to turn of general chat since it seems people don't know how to be cordial to each other anymore. The chat really got down right disgusting and it felt like there were a bunch of degenerates all around. Very sad.

By the way, I will be playing this as a single player I have no choice, just hope to be able to grab a group once in a while for an elite. Dungeons are out for me this time around. Satellite internet can get laggy and no one wants a laggy player in a dungeon run, it just doesn't work out and isn't fair to the others in the group. So me, myself, and I it is.

This was the same in 2004. Actually it was possibly a bit worse because the younger generation is a hell of a lot more socially aware and conscientious now than they were then. We are talking about the generation of 4channers that were in WoW. This very forum is called Barrens Chat. Did you ever visit the Barrens on any server in retail vanilla? It was a cesspool of trolls... Was this phenomenon isolated to the Barrens? No. This was simply where the lower level players who didnt have much investment in their characters met one of the biggest zones in the game so it created a perfect storm situation. But Barrens Chat represented the playerbase as a whole because it was one of the few places where people were unfiltered. The hardcore min/max scene has always been intolerant... BG premades have always been elitist and abrasive...

Just /ignore idiots. If your chat log is super spooky, just switch over to your combat log until you leave the zone. This is an MMO, you get the good with the bad. Vanilla wasnt only magical for its positive interaction. Negative interaction was JUST as important. The social ramifications for your behaviors and the friction caused between players on their own faction and in world PvP against the opposing faction shaped your experience. Interaction is good for the game whether or not that interaction is positive or negative. The game does not need safe spaces, you just need to learn how to filter the people who you choose to communicate with.

The real world is filled with assholes. If you want an immersive experience, you should be interacting with assholes because that is realistic.

Code: Select all

/ignore trolls
And the rest will be filtered out by you as you see fit. If you think someone is being really inappropriate and shouldn’t be heard by anyone else either - there’s always the report function.

I think the best thing is to be in a very active guild where the green will outweigh the brown in your chat window

Every corner of the internet is going to have people like this, and as those have said, in some form or another this existed back in the old days, too. The stuff that crosses the line, report, but people just being jerks, if it bothers you enough, /ignore them. People get way too worked up over people offending their mother still these days. Just move on--they want a reaction.

Best advice here. The very fact that posts like this exist, reinforces their poor social behavior and encourages them to continue. They want to get you worked up. It worked.

There are a whole batch of people who behave like the ones OP described ingame, and when they read posts like this, they grin from ear to ear.

I'm sorry to hear that this was your experience in the starting zones. Unacceptable on any level but like Faendor said earlier. A majority of those people will be the first to either bugger off or just stay in Elwynn Forest making every zone thereafter an oasis of serenity.

My personal experience however these last few days couldn't be more different. I've levelled several chars in different starting zones on a EU-PvE server and it's everything I thought (and hoped) it would be. Asking for help or info in /1 and people were helpful. Everybody buffing everybody else left right and center on just passing. One group up after another for difficult stuff and no anti-semitic jokes to be seen anywhere.
If anything I'd say you were extremely unlucky or I was extremely lucky.

yeah ive learnt by now from being a part of several private server launches that its best to just not even join world chat and mostly ignore your chat box completely unless you actually need help with a quest or whatever else, at least for the few weeks. nothing but incels and drooling retards looking to bait people in there.
since its actually retail though, you can probably report people and theyd actually suffer consequences on their account for being assholes

Lol

But actually yeah this is sound advice. Can’t be taking people too seriously in a mmo video game..

If you seriously don’t stand it though, create a custom chat window and choose the chat channels you want to appear. This way you can still chat in /say or /party without seeing toxic /general. I believe this is implemented into the game at this point but otherwise chat addons is a way?
