Hello dear Barrens Chat, My name is Håkon and i'm currently 21 years of age.
I feel this is the right community to vent my frustrations to, as all of you guys are very open and kind.

For background purposes;

I started playing WoW in mid/late TBC during my early teens.
I've always played lots of WoW since then and i can truly say i have enjoyed it, but only in short bursts. Ever since i started playing WoW i have always created a character, leveled it either to max or close to max level and then rerolled. This held true for every single expansion since tbc, until Legion launched. I actually held on to my blood dk for around 6 months, and i loved it!.

I am one of those people that "100% decides" on one class, only to reroll soon after. I always end up choosing a class, convincing myself that it's the right class for me, and then just giving up and rerolling. I truly love doing dungeons and raids, and a long term goal of mine is to progress completely through naxxrammas.

Everytime i decide on a class, only to reroll, i feel completely gutted. I feel sick and it really gets me down. I have gone through this cycle too many times to count..

Fast forward to today:

I am still going through that viscous cycle and i've "100% decided" on a class for classic around 30 times...
This is affecting every game i play now, not only wow.
I still don't know if i want to tank, heal, or dps.
It has hit the point where it's affecting my mental health, evertime i think about what class i'm going to main and thinking on all the variables are really stressing my body out.

I am so obessed with choosing the "right" class and always taking in every single variable i can find, watching ludicrous amounts of content.
The only thing i know for sure is that i want to play 1 class, and 1 class only. I am too tired and depressed from switching characters and "mains" several times a month, and doing the same progression over and over again, instead of going forward. It has come to the point where i feel i don't enjoy any class or spec.

I truly NEED help, i hope that some of you guys can give some useful feedback

That's why you choose Druid. It's the class for the undecided, since you can be almost viable in all 4 roles. In order from optimal to viable:
- resto
- feral tank
- feral DPS
- ranged DPS

You can either go a hybrid spec, a focused spec, or respec when necessary to fill different needs (expensive habit).

Best of luck.

What @Selexin said. With druid you can still work on your character even if you working towards gear for different spec. Be a druid and don't look back.

I will have a druid alt and I'm looking forward to play him quite a lot. Later on he might even be main. :D Who knows.

Playing as a druid might be a good idea, as @Selexin said you can play in any four of the roles you like for a respec fee of course.
If your will is strong enough to face the levelling process of the warrior, they are the best tanks and fury/arms can do some serious damage, while you're in plate armour too.

I wouldn't recommend in your case playing a one role class like rogue or warlock but every class has it's ups and downs and each one are still fun to play.

What you want is a class with multiple roles.
That is Druid, Warrior, Priest, Shaman, Paladin.

I like to emerge myself into the lore of the character I'm playing. This help a lot because not only is the lore good but it helps you
understand how some classes, quests, zones and over all how the game works and why things are the way they are. Don't just
see yourself as a class or a certain role. See yourself as the character you are playing and how you can help and contribute to
the community.

Don't rush it. Slowroll and enjoy. Read the quests. There are so many long chain quests with such rich lore and history. Read up
on the lore of the raids/dungeons you are gonna do and what history it has with your class.

With that said, there is nothing wrong with changing characters often. Maybe you just like a little bit of everything, that's fine.

If you are worried about what role to play, choose hybrids. Shaman, Druid, Paladin, Priest etc.
Druid is the only class (not counting shaman tank) that can play all three roles (also choosing between ranged and melee dps) but two out of those 4 options are not really viable in raids. So either you heal or be a little lucky to be the feral dps in the guild.

Shamans are most of the time healers in raids, very seldom do they take Enhancement and same as Balance druid, elemental goes out of mana too fast. Elemental shamans are really good in PvP though, and with luck so are Enhancement shamans. Shaman tank can be some what viable in 5-man.

Priest you can either heal (best healing class in Vanilla, close second is Paladin) or you can DPS as Shadow. Again guilds usually bring maximum of 1 shadowpriest due to the debuff, so here you also have to be a little bit lucky to get a guild.

Paladins can tank (not raid viable), Melee dps (not raid viable) and lastly Heal (Very raid viable).

Warrior are the best tanks in the game, and also dps very well.

If I didn't forget any class that can fill more then one role, rest are pure dps (Hunter, Mage, Warlock, Rogue)

I would suggest you take a break from deciding and wait till Classic comes. It sounds like you are pretty burned out and not only regarding WoW. This is closely related to RL stuff imo. Do something you enjoy that is distanced from wow period. That way you will avoid further burnout and you will be excited for the launch. Stop researching, just do something else instead.

But regarding the pick, only you yourself know what experience you want to have.

There is a Class picking guide here but if you are this undecided I think it may do more harm than good haha.

Piggybacking @Selexins comment, Druid is the actually true versatile class, but I fear that respec costs may drive you nuts especially in Classic.

One tip I can give to you is, do not play a class because it performs well, or people will invite you to groups, or your guildmates want you to play. Don't get swayed by other people's opinions. Pick something that you would enjoy.

Perhaps this time around you can go for the lore behind any given class? All of the class quests are rich in lore (if you take the time to actually read the quests), and if you stop to smell the flowers you might find it more enjoyable overall.

Re-reading this post, I'd actually advise against using a class picking guide and maybe look some lore videos or read up some WoW books, and get some inspiration from what others have written.

When I start to get burned out of a game or even gaming in general I usually start making alts (in wow, in this case) just so to quit after some time. I have learned to also enjoy doing other things outside gaming. Then when I come back to the games I am more focused on what I really want and stick to it. Maybe you should take a break from the games and come back later when classic is out. Goodluck

This, get engulfed in your character!
Take the fantasy side of looking at classes!

Before I even started playing the game I got hyped by reading the game manual!
Although many that consort with demons fall to darkness, the
warlock class manages to bend demonic forces to its will without
succumbing to pure evil. These spellcasters can summon demons
to serve them, and they also cast many painful spells that slowly
eat at the life of enemies. Warlocks are a physically weak class, but
they compensate for this deficiency with their potent array of
spells and their demonic pets.

I have some completely different advice here

Coming from a similar position I'd say to try to stop caring about the class at all. Play the character you want to do and ENJOY it. For example, start a priest and if you enjoy people whispering, dancing for buffs healing then go ahead. If you get tired of doing it then you can stop.

A lot of people don't like swapping chars because it feels like you "wasted" time. But in the end WoW is a game and if you enjoy that "wasted" time by swapping chars then that's all there is to it. A game is meant to be enjoyed

I'm always floating around warlock/priest it's a nightmare, tried every class on Legion to 110. Then I sticked for the entire expansion with my Dk, all 3 specs.
My advice is playing the role you enjoy the most, DPS can be boring in PvE, but fun on PvP.
Tanking requires a lot more concentration.
And healing, responsibility.
Every personality is different, so find the one that identifies you the most.

Lots of good points in this thread. I'm pretty sure a lot of what you're feeling is just excitement and something like apprehension for Classic to release. I do what you do a lot when I'm excited for something and don't have a way to engage with it right that moment. If you can, just take a break from it all. Don't stress about choices in a game that's supposed to be fun and relaxing.

If you can't resist, try to make a detailed leveling guide for yourself for one class. I tell everybody I get to try MMO's that they should try out a character but stop if it's just not fun for them, and make a new character. If you're almost to endgame content and quit (level 40-59 or so) that's a different story, you just don't want to go through the process of making that final leveling push, or something else in your life is affecting you which is probably more important than WoW.

At the end of the day I dinged 60 because I wanted to continue my character's story to its in-game end, not because I wanted to complete raid content. You are the person that gets to choose why you're invested in a character or not.

Did my brother make an account on Barrens Chat?!?! This is literally the same issue my brother has. I honestly wish Blizz had a form of parental locks (friend locks?) to allow me to log into his account (with his permission) and lock the character creation logo so he was stuck with whatever he had. I guess you need to figure out WHY you are rerolling, especially at such a high level. Are the classes you're playing not fulfilling? It would be easy for us to say "play a druid they can do everything", but one of your goals is Naxx. Which class will act as the best vessel to get you to Naxx? What are your realistic options and opportunities as a druid in Naxx? Only you can answer this by looking at your own wants, your goals, the reality of each spec you may want to play and what your timeline is.

"I still don't know if i want to tank, heal, or dps." This is key. We need this before we can make a class recommendation.

I have the exact same problem. It's why I'm going to try to main a druid this time around, though I doubt that will help me. I'm never torn between roles, the only one that interests me is dps (though I end up tanking a lot while leveling if playing a class that's capable, just because I know how and I'd rather do it myself than wait for hours or let some moron do it). But even though all I care for is dps, it's the lore/ aesthetic/ difference in playstyle that makes me reroll. I love playing a hunter, but after a while I get tired of using a bow and managing the pet. So I'll start playing my rogue. And I'll stick with it for a while, and enjoy the hell out of it, until I start to get the itch for some spell casting. And the cycle continues. At least like three years after launch I'll have a 60 of every class?

Edit: Oh and to make things better the only two races I really enjoy playing are nelf and forsaken... 12 years of altoholism has been so amazing...

Tauren Hunter. I can't quite put it into words, but if when I said that it crossed your mind that Tauren Hunter is not optimal for PvP (orc) or PvE (troll), or that everyone hates "huntards" and doesn't want them in groups, then this is definitely the class/race combo you yearn for.

I don't think there's much that can be said to help you with your altoholic problem. I say that because I think your problem transcends the game itself. It's your mental health that is causing you to be dissatisfied with the game, not your dissatisfaction with the game that is affecting your mental health. Sorry to break out a harsh truth on you, but that's how I see it.

Which of the classes where involved (or most of the time involved) during these times you made a decision?

I too was an altoholic when vanilla first came out. I had come to the game from a history of the warcraft and starcraft franchises (as RTS was my favourite genre when I was a wee one.)

When I got my hands on WoW I was blown away. Everything from warcraft 3 was there, hell even 1 and 2. I made a Night Elf druid as my first character, as Night Elf was my favourite race to play as in Warcraft 3, and druids of the claw and talon were my favourites as well. You play a night elf and you see Ancient Protectors walking around! You could build Ancient Protectors in Warcraft 3! How awesome is that! I had to know what else the game had for me. Welp... that druid lasted until level 23 or so. And thus my altoholic nature began. I tried every single variation of characters you could think of. My vanilla wow career was a rehash of every single starting zone ad nauseam.

But then TBC came out and my friends finally bit the bullet and bought the game finally. These friends didn't quite have the history with the Warcraft franchise I did so they didn't care about it in the same way I did, in that I wanted to see all the cool little nooks and crannies the world had to offer. No, they wanted to experience the END GAME *laser light show enabled*. Leveling to them was just an obstacle to the end game. So we all made characters together Tetra, Hydrow, and Cannibinol (that was me). We all leveled together, until we didn't because one of us blasted past the others. Plus, I would stop leveling and level an alt because I still liked playing alone without having to talk to people over comms or anything sometimes.

Well, halfway through TBC we found out our other friend was playing, and he was crazy. His life was WoW. He eventually got so insane with the game that he never had to pay for gametime anymore because he would just "sell" gold to people in return for game time, that's how much gold he had accumulated over all his time playing WoW. He had his own guild, his knowledge of the game exceeded anyone I have ever met. So, needless to say, we three ditched those characters and joined our friends server. We made new characters, all blood elves. No matching name theme this time however.

And now I had the hard decision. Do I give into my altoholic nature again and never experience the end game with my friends, while they are all having fun running raids and killing alliance without me?

I said goodbye to my other characters that day, because I decided playing with friends was more important than experiencing every class and every starting zone over and over.

I guess all this is to say that if you have friends who play this game it is infinitely more fun to play with them at end game then it is to play the game over and over alone.

I feel your pain, not to the extent you do, but I do feel it. You have to stop looking for "THAT" toon, but better yet, just enjoy the toon you're on. Whether its for the time being or just because you want to relax and enjoy it. When you feel the urge to re-roll; respec. Learn a whole new playstyle.

I've been an ALT-O-HAULIC since Release in Nov '04. I focus on my main toon to a point and then I start fluttering around to others. I finally stopped the madness by rolling a druid in Legion. (only took like 17 expansions) The druid really helped quell my ALT issues, just swapping from Feral, Healing, Tanking, and Ranged as I saw fit.

Hope you can get some peace out of the comments above my friend. Regardless of what toon you're on, if its Alliance, I will gank it :P
