What do you guys think? I haven't played seriously since... probably end of Wrath/start of Cataclysm. Had some month here and there since then, but latest was with the release of Legion in 2015. I don't really have that much to play now so I'm thinking of just resubbing. I don't have BfA though, just Legion - is BfA *necessary* if I just want to resub and have some entertainment before Classic releases?

I'd say no.
I personally think you should be able to hold yourself until Classic. It's not that long time left.
But if you enjoy World of Warcraft in its current state, I see no problem if you want to get back into it. I know it's not for me anymore, though.

I haven't played retail since Wrath but playing a patch behind everyone sounds like a bad experience. Also if the changes in Cataclysm took you out of the game I bet you'll be even less impressed with the state of things now.
Some people have been playing Warcraft 3 to burn time. I was about to do the same but I don't want to spoil Reborn.

I resubbed trying to get my account into beta and honestly I feel so dumb for it. Initially I was like naw this is a scam but they got me in after the Streamers did WPvP in Arathi. Going to cancel a day before sub ends.

I do not plan on it. I got my fill with Legion and do not want to risk burning myself when getting to 60 in Classic is going to take enough time as it is.

Warcraft 3 is great, but the thing I loved the most was custom maps. Too bad the B.netservers are quite dead nowadays.Lendryn wrote: ↑5 years agoI haven't played retail since Wrath but playing a patch behind everyone sounds like a bad experience. I'm going to resub closer to the release date, spend the gold on my main account for free subscription time and secure names - but there is no point and no drive for me to play BFA right now. As far as I can see from Youtube, Twitch, Reddit and MMO Champion the game just doesn't stack up anymore.
But different folks, different strokes!

Well, haven't played in many years so I thought this would be a good opportunity to get some quality time in. Even if it's BfA, it's still WoW is what I'm thinking.

It's really not WoW anymore. The gameplay loop is essentially D3, but wow skinned and with wow combat. It's no longer and MMO or an RPG, it's an online single-player with some grouping, and endless randomly generated loot grind.
Not much point in resubbing IMHO.
Instead I got more active on a couple private servers refreshing memory of leveling routes.

Legion is quite interesting if you care about the WoW lore. Order halls are also quite fun. Id say from a narrative perspective class identity was at its peak during Legion. Just dont expect to get challenged in any meaningful way.

You could try the Dota 2 arcade then; a lot of the WC3 custom greats have been remade there, plus new big ones like AutoChess.

I usually play on private servers and then play retail while im on flight paths or waiting for groups/raids to assemble. I treat retail like a mini game. If you've got the itch, scratch it! If nothing else it will act as a great contrast to Classic when it launches.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll keep thinking about it, but it's nice to hear some varied answers. Lore is definitely a big thing for me, so just that would be nice to experience.
Oh wow, really? Will definitely check it out. Moba has never been my thing so haven't really kept myself up to date with Dota 2.

BfA is easily the worst that the game has ever been. Easily. It's absolutely not worth $15 a month. I wouldn't even play it for free, to be honest.

i did resub 2 Weeks ago because i like retail WoW just got burned out at the release of BFA because it was more a job then playing a game. Was one of the first on my server to clear all Mythic Dungeons (because i really wanted to get into raiding this time) and did every WQ till the first raid got released.
Got into a Friendly Guild but we wiped hard at the first boss and just stopped caring for it. Played 2 more months and stopped.
Now i having fun doing World PvP, Grinding Rep for the Zandalari and doing Truns. I also wanted to get into a LvL 60 Stop guild and having some fun doing that.
This is the great thing about wow that you always can find something to do and having fun but if you pressure yourself to much it can take all the fun away.

When I resubscribe to reserve names I want I have a lot of stuff on my retail characters to sell for like 500k gold, so I should be able to get a few tokens out of it.

Only reason I would resub is for a chance at the Beta, I probably wouldn't even install Retail... So disappointed by BFA.
