Hey, so what's the deal with hunters training pets to get upgraded pet abilities? I played a hunter up to 40 pretty casually on a private server, but didn't really learn as much as I should have. Once classic launches, I want to roll hunter again. I noticed that I was frequently running out of TP in training my pet. Can I avoid using TP if I learn the new abilities by taming new pets? Do I have to use the new pets, or can I tame them for the ability, then set them loose again?
Also, is LW/Skinning or Mining/Engineering kind of the default? Or is enchanting okay for hunter, too?

Hey Laphroaig welcome!
To answer your question - yes, you can use other pets to gain new abilities. In order to level up pet ability ranks you need to use them repeatedly with the pet that knows the ability natively.
There’s a handy website called Companion Codex which lists all pets and the abilities they possess originally and those they are capable of using.
So the process is:
- I have a pet wolf called Talisker, but I want it to learn Furious Howl rank 2.
- I go onto the bestiary and search for it. Bingo, Ghostpaw Alphas have this ability at rank 1.
- I tame Ghostpaw Alpha and put Talisker back in the stables.
- On Ghospaw Alpha I use Ferocious Howl until it ranks up to lvl 2.
- I then get Talisker back out of the stable and FH rank 2 will be in the beastmaster window.
Hope that answers your question!

If I were you I’d definitely pick up engineering if you fancy doing a lot of PvP, kind of a must-have for vanilla. For the second profession I don’t know - I’ll try and play with a guild (Barrens Chat!!!) where we all have access to the crafting professions shared between us at mate’s rates.

Thanks. That answers my question for the most part. What about TP? Can you explain how it works? I felt like I was always running out when trying to train up skills and resistances on my pet

This is the only question I can answer, sadly, but hopefully the above answer should have helped you already.
With a profession, you can honestly go with pretty much anything you want. Leatherworking and skinning is good because you can craft yourself some good armour pieces actually.
Engineer is more or less the main profession for PvP, it does help a lot.
Enchanting is an universally good profession because of its need for every type of player, plus the glow makes your weapons extra cool

Thanks so much for this! I never truly understood this, but now I do. Perhaps I'll carry on with my hunter!Ravenheart wrote: ↑7 years agoHey Laphroaig welcome!
