Hi, I'm a total noob, would just like to start with that. I'm a more casual player, and have been enjoying open world pvp while leveling. I've been hearing a lot that playing a druid means I'm pigeon holing myself into the healer role. I enjoy the hybrid style of playing and being able to have an ability/answer to any encounter and was interested in a play style that uses moonfire instant cast plus the utility and tankiness of feral. Can someone please explain why or why not this build i've made up would work. Thanks all.

Essentially, you plan on spending most of your time PvP'ing?

Druids can do so much. People who say you are pigeonholing yourself into a healing role are wrong. Sure, in a raiding environment you'll likely be healing more than anything. You can get a spot in a raid group as an off tank or even as a boomy or kitty dps IF your group needs it, but most of the time in raiding, yes, you will be healing. For instance, I wanted to tank in my raid group, but we already had too many tanks, so I said screw it, i'll just heal, because i'd rather raid than not.

As for PvP... Deep balance/resto NS is a great open world pvp build. It can be rather gear dependant, but even if you lack +spell damage gear it can still whittle down people if you kite well. And you generally don't want to be a "healer" in pvp because your heals take too long to cast, or are just not mana efficient enough (regrowth). Blanketing people with HoTs is a good idea, but generally (if the opposing team is good) they won't just let you sit there and spam out 2.5/3 second healing touches.

The build you linked is alright, but balance doesn't really get too much benefit from the feral tree. I love me feral charge, don't get me wrong, and it can be absolutely amazing to shut down people or even make an escape, but I think those points are wasted. You'll be much better off getting NS in the resto tree.
To be honest, if you're not getting NS why wouldn't you get boomkin form?

The whole reason to not take boomkin form is because you want to be able to cast insect swarm and heals.

I would go for a build more akin to this. Maybe not exactly this, there is a lot of room to play with druids talent trees so it's really up to you, but this is a good base.

The reason why you don't want to feral charge into people as a balance spec is because your survivability will be lower than if you were going with a HotW/NS build. Also, NS is way too clutch of a talent to not take in pvp. It will save you in so many instances. You can create a 1 button macro to cast NS and immediately cast your highest rank healing touch, leading you to go from 3% hp to max hp in less than a second.

This kind of a build is all about keeping distance. Kiting is key with this build. And it's a pretty great build for open world pvp.

I cant speak to the pvp spec, but this statement is wrong.
Im currently tanking all content in 25 man runs and have run into no issues. Feral is viable, and I would say one good feral tank is Optimal for your raid group compasition. Obviosuly heals is also good.

Balance tends to get the short of the stick, but i hear they are getting a spot in the crazy speed runs?

Druid PvP is insane fun :)

You asked for some feedback on your build, so here goes:

Firstly, it's obvious you will neither be Feral nor Resto with this build, when in PVE group situations, but unfortunately I can't speak to the PVE aspects of playing Balance. Let it be said that there are many a build out there that you can PvP and PvE with quite well, if your goal is not to optimize for one of the two. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to DPS in dungeon groups or even early Raids with pickup groups with this build.

Also, I think I understand what you want to do with this build and I like going away from what is "optimal" as well, so I'm going to go ahead and not tell you what to roll instead, but how I would adjust it to make it suit me a little better :)

That being said, here is my 2 cents:

  • You don't need Thick Hide in PvP Situations. I'd much rather have an additional second of stun on Bash & pounce.
  • You are still completely free to choose where the other 3 points in the feral tree go.
  • Personally I would go for Feral instinct to be harder to detect.
  • Furor is not needed for instant Feral Charge if you are using a https://classic.wowhead.com/item=8345/wolfshead-helm :)
  • The points gained by removing this I would spend in Improved entangling Roots, Moonkin Form and Feral Instinct

Welcome to the forum & the club of druids!

I wanna add that the tooltip for https://classic.wowhead.com/item=8345/wolfshead-helm is wrong. I don't know why, but it always adds 10 rage, not just 5. It will forever be my dungeon helm always and forever. I'll switch to better helms when raiding because the wolfshead helm has crap for stats and we have basically infinite rage when tanking raid bosses, but in dungeons I find way more utility in being able to grab chunks of rage on demand when powershifting. This is probably pretty helpful in PVP as well.
