Hi everyone,
I was wondering with all the rising debate around RP-PVP servers, what should we expect from server population by each region ?

Actually, do we have precised information about this ? Do they plan to release servers for Europe, all in English, or are we going to have servers for each language like in retail and zone (NA, Europe...) ?

I'm a little bit afraid of the consequences of having too much server for a player base which size is still unknown. I don't know what population they plan to have in each server, I guess in retail during classic it was between 1500 and 3000. Still a lot when you consider servers type (PVE/PVP/RP) and zone. As a French, I wouldn't to start in a soon-to-be dead server and I would love to meet people from all over the world like I did in private server.

What do you think about that ? In which zone do you plan to play ? Do you have more information ?

I don't think they have released any information regarding the amount of realms per region etc.
No one wants to level a character on a server that might die due to low population, that's a fact.
But it will be a difficult task for Blizzard to balance the amount of realms per type per region because initially there will be a big hype so many servers might be full at the beginning. Depending on how many people stop playing your server might be ending up with low population after a while..
I guess it's a safer bet to start on a realm where many big guilds/communities are starting. But then again they'll have to release information regarding the amount of realms/the name of the realms so everyone can start planning. I can't remember how the guilds/communities planned back in Vanilla though?

I never understood that "playing with the whole world" argument. that might be true for some US&UK Realms but not for the language specific realms. Personally im glad they handling it this way because timezone and people not beign able to communicate proper is a huge drawback

Well, they're never going to learn English if they don't interact with it right?

But yeah, from a practical standpoint you're right. Chinese, Russians, French, Germans, Spanish, South Americans should have their own servers for Language reasons. As far as timezones go, it's also advantageous to have high/low population activity schedules, because it allows for farming late night in peace and quiet and all of that. On private servers you generally get either a high pop or a low pop server on every hour and it's frustrating.

I'll be playing in the EU and fortunately I will have some NA players/friends with me, mostly people I've managed to recruit from private servers.

I would consider playing on the American servers but the time difference favors Europe. It is far easier for them to raid at 11AM when it's 7PM here on a weekend than it would be for me to raid at 3AM when it's 7PM there at any time. Since Classic WoW is not just about raiding and my guild is offering much more than that, they are alright with it. At the same time, I win with Officers and people who can be active in my guild all-around the clock.

I think anyone can agree with that, except for meeting Chinese and sometimes Russians. Nothing against them as individuals, they just don't speak English or anything remotely similar to it. Not to mention the history with botting, DDoS-ing the servers when they were denied access, gold selling etc.

On top of that, the problem with meeting people all over the world on private servers makes it very difficult to raid with them. It is a total and absolute dick to make friends with someone, have them in their guild, but when you realize they're NA and you're EU to have to say "yeah mate, sorry, we can't continue playing together as a guild because of our different schedules".

If you don't want your realm to die, it's fair to say you should stick with a high population PvP server. My reasoning for that is that there will always be a steady number of players leaving the server at any time, so in order for a realm to be at a healthy population it needs to have a steady influx of players joining the server. New players tend to want to play on high-population servers, which is what has led to our current situation on retail WoW realms where we have a few very high-population realms and dozens of low-population realms.

I'm with you on that. While I totally understand the need for language localization, and the purpose of having separate regions for reasons such as maintenance, population hours, support hours, content release, etc. I really am going to miss having the option of a world server that private servers offer us. Many of us that have been playing vanilla, or other older expansions for years have become used to playing with folks around the world. Some dislike this, but some such as you and myself like it.

I am originally from the US, but live in Europe now. My best friends who still live back home will be segregated from me by these closed-region locks placed on WoW by Blizzard. Even having the option to switch between regions freely would be nice, like you can do with literally ever other Blizzard game. Currently if you want to play on another region, you're forced to re-buy the game, its expansions, etc. Very annoying. I just wish I had the choice, then I could have an alt or something to play with friends if I had the time. Instead I'd need to maintain two WoW account subscriptions which is just ridiculous.

Aside from professions server choice has to be the hardest decision for me right now.

I'm from Europe and back in the Vanilla days it was a no-brainer for me to roll on a localized server, because my English sucked.
I started on PvE, then moved to PvP with some friends, later on experienced RP(-PvP) and finally ended up on RP-PvE.

The last years I spend my time on several Vanilla servers which helped to improve my English quite a bit - first on PvP servers, then on PvE (which were always struggling due to a small and declining player base).

Now I'm sort of torn.

I like PvP servers for their sense of additional threat, but I'm also a carebear at heart and would never attack someone for no reason - and from my experience most world PvP isn't about honourable fights, but plain and simple harassment / ganking.
So yeah - I will most likely choose a PvE server and do battlegrounds if I feel like PvPing.

I'm also interested in roleplay, but honestly I've always been sort of a light roleplayer - and I'm also interested in raiding and doing battlegrounds, so I'm not sure if I match the "requirements" of an RP server.
If I'd roll on an RP server I would most likely choose a localized one, because roleplay requires a rich vocabulary, which my English still lacks.

On the other hand I like the idea of trying my luck on an English server, because I somehow got used to the English client and community and would like to continue improving my English and meet people from all over Europe.
An English server would probably also mean a wider range of raid times, which is a big plus for me and my unusual gaming schedule.

Anyone else in a similar boat like me, struggling to decide between localized / English and PvE / RP-PvE (or even PvP) servers?

This is kinda me. I won't have as much time for the game as I'd like. I've played the hell out of private servers and, while not a ganker, enjoy the danger a PvP server can bring and it makes the whole world dangerous. But I just won't have the time to be ganked and corpse run etc. I want to be able to login, pump some leveling for 3-4 hours, and go to bed. Having to vacate an entire zone because of being corpse-camped by some guy 15 levels higher is a giant waste of time for me. I'm sure most players will end up on PvP servers, especially the private server players, and that playing on a PvP is the "true" vanilla experience, but I know what I'm missing out on and I could take it or leave it. I put a higher value on getting my leveling done and doing some dungeon/raid content with some cool, fun people. I'd rather eliminate things that get in the way of that.

Yea I feel you. Being also french, past the crazyness of the first weeks, the odds of ending up on a dead server can be quite high. I guess you could aim to go on the same server as popular streamers since they will be followed by a lot of followers, but that means playing with people that can be really toxic at times.

On my part, if there's a RP-PvP server a the beginning, it's near a no brainer but still, RP-PvP can end being fairly empty (as shown in retail during WoTLK). I'll wait for Blizzard to communicate on that matter and gather infos on different forums.

What I am hoping for is that wow classic doesn't divide NA or Eu players like they do in regular wow. Like I would need to get two wow licenses to play with my EU peeps and my NA peeps. Which is ridiculous when you can play with people from Oceania or SA but your friends across the atlantic unless you pay for it.

I just want to avoid streamer servers at all costs. They are literally a blight to the game.

Hopefully I get lucky. The server I do choose to play on I will immediately spend my name reservations to claim 3 streamer names hoping that will deter them from rolling on that server.
