With our recent announcement regarding server types and RP-PvP type servers, we've seen a lot of contention both on the forums and around the internet. We had hoped that the community at large would appreciate us sticking true to Vanilla World of Warcraft and opting to keep RP-PvP servers out of our initial release but it seems this has put a lot of players out that had initially hoped to play on their preferred realm type.
Over the course of the past few weeks we have had many internal discussions on how best to remedy this issue, but were unable to come to a solid conclusion that would fit our, and our players' needs. One of the biggest challenges that the World of Warcraft team faces is maintaining functional operation across all of our available servers and to put it bluntly we simply do not have the capacity to fulfill the server requirements that come with Vanilla World of Warcraft if RP-PvP is enabled at launch. To this end it has been decided that perhaps allowing people to toggle their realm type on the fly while sharding all available realms may provide the experience our players are after while retaining optimal server capacity and ensuring peak player experience.
This means that all servers will be of "Normal" type in the realm list, and once logged in a player will be able to type /pvp, /pve, /rp or /rppvp into their chat window to be swapped over to the relevant server shard they desire. Not only will this assist with capacity requirements, we're hoping that players will find this a welcome change to World of Warcraft that helps put the World back into Warcraft.

No longer will I be swallowed by a sudden dread creeping up my wizardy cuffs, my escaping moves down already, since I'll have the servers to back that old nag up !

All joking aside - from an RP point of view I think I would welcome the introduction of a system like this.
Maybe it would prevent more people who aren't interested in roleplay at all from mistakenly rolling on RP servers.

Wont this completely destroy server identity, in the means of knowing "everyone" on your server, what guilds, what top end players and such that you knew back in the day.

Wow. I have to say, this was such a semi-believable bad change that I thought it coulda been real. But alas, tis the day for such things.
