Sunwell Plateau Raid Guide

sunwell plateau raid guide tbc classic

Greetings and welcome to our strategy guide for the Sunwell Plateau raid in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic! Located on the Isle of Quel’Danas, Sunwell Plateau is the last raid in Phase 6 for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic.

Unlike Mount Hyjal and Black Temple, Sunwell Plateau is the last raid to obtain Tier 6 gear. Sunwell Plateau consists of a total of 8 bosses that begins with Kalecgos and ending with Kil’jaeden. Just like Black Temple and Mount Hyjal, progression through this raid is linear and none of the bosses within are optional.

This guide aims to help you understand how best to prepare yourself and your raid group for Sunwell Plateau by giving you an overview of each encounter, providing an in-depth explanation of each boss, discussing positioning and how you can set yourself up for success. We will also cover the attunement process and how you can reach the entrance.

You can find a full list of gear that’s available in our Sunwell Plateau Loot section.

Attunement Process

Unlike most of the previous raids that have been released for The Burning Crusade Classic, there is no attunement process required to step foot into the raid. In addition to this, unlike when the raid originally was released, the entire raid will be available on May 12th.

Finding the Entrance to Sunwell Plateau

The most convenient and easiest way for players to make there way to the Isle of Quel’Danas, you will need to make your way to Shattrath City. Within Shattrath, there will be a portal you can take within the Terrace of Light. Keep in mind that in order to access this portal, you will need to be dismounted first. After using the portal to the Isle of Quel’Danas, you will need to make your way

Raid Preparation

Sunwell Plateau is a 25-man raid in The Burning Crusade Classic. Just like Black Temple and Mount Hyjal, Sunwell Plateau requires players to follow a linear order in defeating each boss. The bosses that can be found within Sunwell Plateau are:

1. Kalecgos / Sathrovarr the Corruptor
2. Brutallus
3. Felmyst
4. Eredar Twins – Lady Sacrolash & Grand Warlock Alythess
5. M’uru / Entropius
6. Kil’jaeden

Kalecgos / Sathrovarr the Corruptor

kalecgos strategy guide (sunwell plateau) tbc classic
  • Tanks
    • All Tanks:
      • After the 3rd portal, all tanks immediately enter the next portal after they are relieved and taunt the next boss right away.
      • Make sure there are healers nearby before taunting Sathrovarr off Kalec.

    • Tank A – Initial Tank
      • Quickly move Kalecgos to his original position and make sure his front & back aren’t facing the raid.
      • You will have fewer and fewer healers on you over time, consider using defensive cooldowns when there’s only a couple.
      • You will enter the 4th or 5th portal, the first portal after an offtank relieves you.
      • Protection Paladin: Use Divine Shield to reset your Arcane Buffet stacks when they’re getting high (8+).

    • Tank B – First Offtank
      • Enter the 1st portal, UNLESS tank C gets teleported. In that case, enter the 3rd portal.

    • Tank C – Second Offtank
      • Enter the 3rd portal — you are skipping the 2nd portal.
      • If you get ported earlier (portals 1 or 2), you will need to announce it on voice so the raid adjusts accordingly.

  • Healers
    • Be very careful with your threat if you get Wild Magic (Green) or Wild Magic (Black) at the start of the fight.
    • The first portal will be very difficult to heal as there are only 2 healers to deal with Sathrovarr’s high damage.
    • Sathrovarr’s Corrupting Strike will deal 10k shadow damage to the tank instantly and stun them; keep them topped off at all times.
    • Throw some heal-over-time spells on the tank before you enter a portal & are ejected from the spectral realm.
    • Wait a few moments before entering the portal if there are no other healers around, don’t leave the tank healer-less.
    • Holy Paladins: You can reset your Arcane Buffet stacks with Divine Shield to keep healing if necessary.

  • Ranged DPS
    • Be very careful with your threat if you get Wild Magic (White) or Wild Magic (Black) at the start of the fight.
    • Once “downstairs”, be careful with your threat if Kalec is tanking Sathrovarr.
    • Stack up with other ranged players & healers when fighting Sathrovarr.
    • Use your personal DPS cooldowns during Heroism / Bloodlust against Sathrovarr.
    • Shadow PriestsWarlocks: Be careful with your self-damage if Spectral Blast or Shadow Bolt Volley are coming up.

  • Melee DPS
    • Be very careful with your threat if you get Wild Magic (White) or Wild Magic (Black) at the start of the fight.
    • Stack up with other melee when fighting Kalecgos if you can’t be more than 10 yards away from each other.
    • Once “downstairs”, be careful with your threat if Kalec is tanking Sathrovarr.
    • Use your personal DPS cooldowns during Heroism / Bloodlust against Sathrovarr.

Brutallus

brutallus strategy guide (sunwell plateau) tbc classic
  • Tanks
    • Use all of the avoidance / mitigation gear you can for this fight — Brutallus hits incredibly hard.
    • Quickly move Brutallus to the designated position at the start of the fight, and then never move from your spot.
    • When Brutallus uses Stomp on the current tank, the off-tank must taunt him right away.
    • Use defensive cooldowns to survive if Brutallus happens to cast Burn on you — Stomp will remove it, so you have to survive until then.
  • Healers
    • People can die very quickly here which will likely cause your raid to wipe — you must stay focused for the full 6 minutes.
    • Burn deals increasing damage, with the last 10 seconds dealing 3200 damage per second — healers responsible for raid healing will need to pump heals into players afflicted by it at this time.
    • Tank healers need to pay attention; your tanks will swap when Brutallus uses Stomp, so start healing the other tank there.
    • Use Super Mana Potions and Dark Runes as much as you can — this fight is long and taxing on your mana.
  • Ranged DPS
    • Use your cooldowns when your raid uses Heroism / Bloodlust for maximum damage output.
    • Watch your threat — you will wipe the raid if you get aggro.
  • Melee DPS
    • Always stay at the designated spot, either behind Brutallus or on his side, and never near a tank.
    • If you ever get hit by Meteor Slash or if Brutallus parries your attacks, that means you’re standing at the wrong spot.
    • You don’t have to move anywhere if you get Burn, but make sure you’re not within 2 yards of other players.
    • Use your cooldowns when your raid uses Heroism / Bloodlust for maximum damage output.
    • Watch your threat — you will wipe the raid if you get aggro.

Felmyst

felmyst strategy guide (sunwell plateau) tbc classic
  • Tanks
    • The Main Tank for the encounter should be the only player in front of the boss and taking damage from Cleave.
    • Save defensive ability and trinket cooldowns for Corrosion.
    • Felmyst does not cause Crushing Blows.
    • A Protection Paladin Off-Tank can be especially helpful in rounding up the adds during the encounter, but not all guilds may choose to use two tanks for this fight.
  • Healers
    • All members of the raid will be taking consistent damage from Noxious Fumes and require a continuous stream of raid healing.
    • Pay attention to when Felmyst uses Corrosion against the tank, as they will take double damage for a 10 second period and require intense healing.
    • Felmyst’s Encapsulate ability will target a random raid member, who will require immediate healing attention if they are to survive the mechanic.
  • Ranged DPS
    • For DPS, this fight simply requires that you pay attention to the positioning mechanics and maximize your DPS output.
    • Mages can use Ice Block to get out of Encapsulate.
  • Melee DPS
    • For DPS, this fight simply requires that you pay attention to the positioning mechanics and maximize your DPS output.
    • Rogues and Paladins can use their Divine Shield and Cloak of Shadows to get out of Encapsulate.
    • Make sure your DPS cooldowns are ready to push through the final ground phase (when Heroism / Bloodlust should be used).

Eredar Twins – Lady Sacrolash & Grand Warlock Alythess

eredar twins (lady sacrolash & grand warlock alythess) strategy guide (sunwell plateau) tbc classic
  • Tanks
    • All Tanks
    • Sacrolash Tanks
      • Stay in a triangle pattern with the melee & your fellow tank at all times — see the The Fight section.
      • You must tank Sacrolash more than 20 yards away from the ranged stack, so they don’t get hit by Shadow Blades.
      • The 2 tanks need to be 1st & 2nd place on threat, as she temporarily ignores the main tank for 6 seconds due to Confounding Blow.
      • The off-tank should be ready to use cooldowns in order to survive when Sacrolash switches to them, as damage can be unpredictable.
      • If your Dark Touched stacks are starting to get high (3-4+), you should dip into the flames left behind Alythess’ Blaze — but communicate that with your raid beforehand.
      • Besides that, you should never move an inch while tanking Sacrolash.
      • There’s nothing for you to tank after Sacrolash dies, switch to DPS mode.

    • Alythess Tank
      • Quickly move Alythess away from Sacrolash & melee when the fight starts — see the The Fight section.
      • Kite her in a circular pattern around her flames, taking care to never leave your healers’ range — /range 40 on DBM can help.
      • You can move closer to Sacrolash in order to get hit by Shadow Blades if your Flame Touched stacks are getting high.
      • Consider using defensive cooldowns if you get targeted by Flame SearConflagration or Shadow Nova.
      • After Sacrolash dies, you’ll want to move Alythess around a bit slower, as your raid must stay directly behind her.

  • Healers
    • You’re staying on the ledge overlooking the Twins until Sacrolash dies, stacked with ranged DPS — see the The Fight section.
    • Tank healers: Keep the MT topped off at all times as Confounding Blow deals heavy damage.
    • Tank healers: Sacrolash will switch to the 2nd highest threat target for 6 seconds after Confounding Blow, so be ready to heal the off-tank.
    • Raid healers: The player targeted by Conflagration will take 1600 damage per second — keep them alive!
    • Raid healers: Players afflicted by Flame Sear will take extremely high damage and must be spam healed like no tomorrow.
    • There’s a TON of raid damage in this fight — stay focused at all times and heal your assigned group & targets.
    • Jump down from the ledge when Sacrolash’s HP reaches 1-2% and stack up behind Alythess.
    • It is highly recommended that you use a PvP trinket (Medallion of the Alliance) to remove Conflagration.

  • Ranged DPS
    • You’re staying on the ledge overlooking the Twins until Sacrolash dies, stacked with healers — see the The Fight section.
    • Use your personal DPS cooldowns during Heroism / Bloodlust against Sacrolash.
    • You must always be 3rd or lower on threat on Sacrolash, or you will likely wipe the raid — just be careful of threat.
    • If the ranged stack doesn’t have any Flame Touched stacks, move out of the stack if you get targeted by Shadow Nova — otherwise, stay in the stack and make sure everyone gets hit so their stacks are reset.
    • Jump down from the ledge when Sacrolash’s HP reaches 1-2% and stack up behind Alythess.
    • Shadow PriestsWarlocks: Hold back with your self-damage as much as possible, particularly while Sacrolash is alive — raid damage is crazy in this fight.
    • Hunters: Use Misdirection on the tanks on cooldown — the extra threat will help out a lot, particularly at the start.
    • Destruction Warlocks: Make sure you are specced into Nether Protection for this fight.

  • Melee DPS
    • Stand behind Sacrolash in a triangle pattern with the tanks at all times — see the The Fight section.
    • Use your personal DPS cooldowns during Heroism / Bloodlust against Sacrolash.
    • You must always be 3rd or lower on threat on Sacrolash, or you will likely die — just be careful of threat.
    • Quickly dip into the flames left behind by Alythess’ Blaze to reset your Dark Touched stacks if needed.
    • Move away from the other melee if you are targeted by Shadow Nova.
    • Make sure you’re not running towards the ranged DPS / healers when moving out due to Shadow Nova / Conflagration.

Kil’jaeden

kil'jaeden strategy guide (sunwell plateau) tbc classic
  • Healers
    • As in other Sunwell Encounters, this fight is incredibly healing intensive so coordinate within the Raid to ensure that everyone is topped off from the signifiant raid damage that is spread about.
    • Because of the positional requirements for Fire Bloom, using spells like Circle of Healing or Chain Heal will not be as fruitful as in other encounters where players are able to stack in groups.
    • Whenever available, make sure to pick up the Blue Dragon buff Breath: Revitalize to help get some self healing and with mana regeneration.
    • Be aware of who each of the five targets of Fire Bloom are when it goes out, as they will be taking damage and splashing damage on to other players.
    • If you are a Holy Paladin effected by Fire Bloom, use Divine Shield to negate the effects.
    • Move under the Shield of the Blue to avoid dying to Darkness of a Thousand Souls.

  • Ranged DPS
    • Ranged DPS will need to focus one of the Hand of the Deceiver adds at a time, and then move to Kil’Jaeden.
    • Spread out 10 yards in an arc around the boss to avoid spreading damage from Fire Bloom.
    • Whenever Sinister Reflection are cast, Ranged DPS should focus them down before shifting damage output back to the boss.
    • Whenever Shield Orbs are summoned, Ranged DPS should make quick work of them.
    • Be prepared to hide under the Shield of the Blue whenever Kil’jaeden prepares his ultimate ability, Darkness of a Thousand Souls.
    • Avoid being impacted by the massive floating Shadow Spikes, as they will deal considerable damage.
    • In the last phase, Kil’jaeden will cast Armageddon, summoning meteors that you will also avoid being impacted by. These are not meteors that you should stack for!
    • This is a long fight and you will likely be able to use most of your cooldowns more than once. However, ensure that all damage increasing cooldowns are ready to go in Phase 5 to finish off Kil’Jaeden.

  • Melee DPS
    • Melee DPS will focus their damage output on one of the Hand of the Deceiver adds at a time during Phase 1, and then move to Kil’Jaeden.
    • Your Guild may assign some Melee DPS to help with Sinister Reflection, but in general Melee should be focusing on pushing Kil’Jaeden to 55% and 25% in order to avoid a third Darkness of a Thousand Souls in Phase 3 or 4.
    • Rogues can use Cloak of Shadows and Paladins can use Divine Shield to negate the effects of Fire Bloom.
    • Be sure to end up under the Shield of the Blue to avoid dying to Darkness of a Thousand Souls.
