Aerial Unit R-21/X Mount Guide

The inv hunterkillershipyellow Aerial Unit R-21/X mount is one of the rewards for defeating King Mechagon in the Operation: Mechagon dungeon on Mythic difficulty. The dungeon has to be completed on Hard Mode, and the mount’s drop rate is 20% for each player that has not yet looted the boss on that week, up to 100% for a 5 player group.

In addition to the drop rate being higher with several people, you cannot solo this dungeon on Hard Mode. So grab a couple friends to make it easier.

Currently, there is a bug preventing players from being in the same instance, and it’s fixed by everyone re-entering the dungeon. However, doing so will reset the instance, and if some bosses have been killed prior to this, you may not be able to activate Hard Mode anymore. So make sure that everyone is in the same instance when entering, before starting the dungeon.

For Hard Mode to be available for King Mechagon, you will need to follow a few steps first.

First 3 Bosses

To activate Hard Mode, you will first have to defeat the first 3 bosses while the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit is hovering above them.

Walkie Shockie X1 adds will periodically spawn throughout those encounters. They are immune to damage, but can still be crowd controlled.

To make those fights easier, you can clear the boss rooms prior to the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit relocating there, as only the bosses need to be defeated this way to activate Hard Mode.

Every time a boss is defeated, the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit will relocate to another boss, until all 3 bosses have been dealt with.

To activate Gunker, you will have to defeat 3 Toxic Monstrosity adds located around the boss room, which can also be done before doing the boss on Hard Mode.

HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit

If all the previous bosses have been defeated on Hard Mode, you will now face the Tank Buster MK2 in the first part of the fight, instead of his MK1 counterpart.

Once this add is defeated, you will need to reach the active Overcharge Station located at the left or the right of the room. The active station will be highlighted in yellow.

On Hard Mode, you will have a minute to reach the Overcharge Station, and finish interacting with it all while avoiding mechanics designed to slow you down.

Here you will need at least one other person helping you, since the more people interact with the station, the faster it goes. And a solo player will simply not have enough time to go through this part of the encounter.

Once that’s done, the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit will be vulnerable in the middle of the room, and can be defeated.

The next boss with changes for Hard Mode is K.U.-J.0..

Here, to activate Hard Mode, you will need to interact with the Robo-Waste prior to the encounter.

Players will be affected by a stacking slow, up to 80%, all while dealing with the fight’s mechanics. So move to the Junk Cubes early, or just nuke the boss.

The Machinist’s Garden encounter also has no changes. The only thing left is defeating the King Mechagon on Hard Mode.

King Mechagon

If all the previous steps have been completed, upon entering you should notice a button that you can interact with.

Interacting with it, will set the boss to Hard Mode and add a new mechanic to the fight.

The Annihilo-tron 5000 will now be present for the entirety of the encounter.

While dealing with the regular mechanics, players will now also have to interact with the 4 Input Panels located around the room.

king mechagon panels

Every time the Annihilo-tron 5000 reaches 35 energy, each of these panels will activate one after the other, with different colours and pictures assigned to each.

Once all of them activated once, players will have to interact with those panels in the same order, before the Annihilo-tron 5000‘s energy reaches 0. If players fail to do so, the party will be defeated.

Every time players successfully complete the sequence, Annihilo-tron 5000‘s energy will reset to 0, and will start draining again. So you will need to repeat this mechanic every ~45 seconds throughout the fight.

Ideally, you will want to assign one panel to each of the players in your group. With some movement abilities, it may be possible with only 2 players.

However, if you’re having a hard time with this boss or do not have enough players to deal with this mechanic, there is a way to cheese this boss:

  1. Start by interacting with the button activating the Hard Mode for King Mechagon.
  2. Pull the boss, and reset the encounter by dragging it out of the boss room before the door closes.
  3. Pull the boss immediately after it respawns.
  4. The button will now remain during the encounter, and you can press it towards the end of the encounter, thus avoiding the Hard Mode mechanic while still getting the credit for it.

If all of the above steps have been completed, you will be awarded with the Keep DPS-ing and Nobody Explodes achievement, and hopefully the Aerial Unit R-21/X mount.
