After watching the recent PvP tournament, I'll just come out and say it. Fear is a stupid spell. Always has been. Let's call it what it is. A 10 second stun with 0 cooldown. You can say - but you have to cast it. To which I say - sure, and after you do, it's a 10 second stun with 0 cooldown. All caster classes need to cast their spells. Then you can say it has DR. To which I reply - exactly. What other hard CC can be spammed by a single character so much the only thing you have to worry about are diminishing returns? You can say - but damage can break it. Again, exactly. Can. When used in conjunction with dots, it won't happen with any regularity to matter. And all Warlocks do is dot.

Let's compare fear with other long CC. Polymorph? Long, no CD, but it heals the target to full. Frost trap? A pain in the ass to hit, any bit of damage breaks it, and 30 seconds CD. Roots? Target can still fight and do everything except move, and druids don't rely on dots nearly as much so their damage actually does break roots.

It's absolutely criminal damage doesn't immediately break fear. Especially since wow's expansions have that functionality. So why should Forever stick to the ridiculous Classic way when we already have a better one? There is no counterplay to fear unless you live in some fantasy land of infinite trinkets or the delusion of being able to stop a caster from casting forever. And worst of all, it's the kind of spell that makes one side simply not play the game. All you do is autorun as you die. Warlock is WoW's Blue Deck user and as anti-fun as a class can get.

Meanwhile Blizzard nerfs Penance just because it heals slightly too much within a week. GG.

I was already considering calling my druid Idont Healwarlocks on account of them being filthy life tap abusers. And the tournament only made me want to do it more.

How would you suggest it be addressed?

It's as simple as it is obvious. Make it so any instance of damage breaks fear, like every other long CC in the game. It keeps the opportunity for warlocks to choose who to engage, and has the skill expression of picking who to dot. Instead of how it's now where the moment they see you, they roll their face over the keyboard to put on 15 instant dots, then cast fear and sit there going "hyuk hyuk, now you can't playe the game...forever."

It would be nice if they implemented this or something similar in PvP but allowed the fear DoT combo still in PvE.

Fear is certainly one of the strongest CC tools in the game for PvP. It always has been. I do agree that between being spammed with Ice Lance when stuck in a Frost Nova and being fully dotted while stuck in an endless Fear, the latter is more annoying. If the tournament were Alliance-side, I think Warlocks would have had a much harder time winning due to items like the Nightskulker Ring, which drops from The Stockades and gives you a 4% chance to resist Fear effects.

Besides the obvious tweak to how much damage you can take before Fear breaks, another fix would be the addition of more items like that ring. Since people can create full resist sets like we've seen Warrior do against Frost Mage, a Fear-resist set would be a viable solution.
