Decursive used to remove debuffs that you were able to from anyone in range of you with one button click without needing to target them or do anything else, Blizzard didn't like how much it automated the game and they changed the game to require you to target the player before pressing a button to be able to interact with them.

What are your opinions on addons that automate the game be it in a small way or a large way?

Decursive was too automated. I used it in MC and I would literally just press one button while watching TV for certain fights where the main duty was decursing targets. I think automation in relation to fights should not be allowed. Automation for auction house and stuff I don't mind. Although sniping add-ons and stuff I'm not sure on, don't have enough experience.

It's tough; decursive is pretty braindead, but it's also really good for raiding, so I'm not entirely sure where I stand on it. I'm sure someone will rewrite it for classic, we just have to see if blizz lets it stay.

Clique and Grid will be missed by healers if they’re not allowed by Blizzard’s addon policy.

WoW's modern client blocks addons like Decursive. Seeing as Classic WoW runs off the modern client, Decursive will not make a return.

Add-ons by definition automate things, with that said I do think automation with the purpose to oversimplify certain mechanics or class features should not be able to be done by add-ons.

It got killed during vanilla so it falls under #nochanges

Again same topic as HealBot. They killed automatization of addons, they are only part of UI and require your action to do anything. AddOns should be allowed in same state as Retail right now. It makes me sick to play in default UI, it's just bad and not good for experienced players who need more than fancy visuals.

Of course not.

If you automate the game then what's left to play :p?

I never really saw the need for using decursive. It was just more clutter on my low low res screen. clicking the appropriate raid frame and then the hotkey for dispell worked just fine for me during tbc. although I did use unit frames during most of my time raiding that would become faded if they were out of a certain range that was the max range for most of my spells. and near the end I ended up making mouseover macros, so I guess I wasn’t far off in terms of functionality I believe.
that addon that decided what heal to use for yo is a big nono for me. what made healing fun was having to quickly decide on what the most optimal spell for a given situation would be.

Folks complain about rotations being too simple in Classic then go out and get mods that make things simpler...smh. Play the game and be immersed or go play candy crush.

I can see where you're coming from, but as someone who is a part of the problem, it sort of makes sense... In a competitive environment, players will use any edge they can to increase their odds of succeeding. This relates to PvE and this relates to PvP. When the most competitive players are using modifications to gain an edge, it raises the base expectations of those competing with them or against them. It wont matter if these addons make the game more mundane and water down the experience. If the addon gives you an edge, a competitive player will use it.

I dont want automated addons. If they are available I will use them. I dont want group finder addons. If they are available I will use them. I can understand how this wont apply to players who are more casual, but for a lot of us, this is the reality. If these addons are available and you choose not to use them to preserve your own experience (which is TOTALLY fine!) you are handicapping yourself and your own progress (which is also TOTALLY fine!).

In a perfect world I would want no addons. Is this a change? Yes. Any change that preserves the core difficulty of the game (or increases it) and promotes longevity while adhering to the core game philosophies, is okay by me! I'll go one step further... I would love if it was feasible to have no macros. As someone who will likely be using dozens of macros over the course of Classic, it would be better if they werent available. Im sure this is an unpopular opinion.

I tend to lean more in this direction also, I would always prefer if there were less ways to automate or make the game 'easier' through addons and macros. But I think this might be a bridge too far, they are trying to recreate vanilla wow, so I think they will try to limit addon and macro usage to what was available in vanilla.

Here's something interesting for you,

Some of the available API allowed creators to design add-ons that were automated in nature. Add-ons like BTM Feeder accessed one key function that allowed for button pressing.

What is BTM Feeder?Show
For those who don't know what BTM Feeder is, basically it was part of the Auctioneer Suite add-on that allowed players to scan the auction house for extremely cheap items. Options could be set in BTM Feeder to buyout or bid on items at a specific value or percentage. Examples of this are: buying all items at 90% of vendor value, and purchasing an item for a specific price.

Code: Select all

PlaceAuctionBid("type", index, bid) - Place a bid on the selected auction item.
Source

BTM Feeder accessed the PlaceAuctionBid LUA function provided by Blizzard's API (not a protected function either) and could automatically bid for you. This was a 100% automated process that required zero player involvement. Once the values were assigned by the user, and you initiated the add-on, it was time for bed.

I remember downloading and abusing this add-on in vanilla, and I also remember Norgana (creator of Auctioneer) quickly removing it from his provided downloads section after being approached by Blizzard.

BTM Feeder made it's return in The Burning Crusade but without the automation part. It wasn't because of ethical reasons, but simply because Blizzard had changed the functionality of the LUA function. Instead of calling the function, and having said function act as a button press, they designed it to require a hardware event i.e. mouse click.

As for Decursive, it's interesting to me that there was not an option available to allow for true automatic de-cursing. The vanilla API allowed for raid frame targeting, as well as button presses, so why not add an option to allow full automation to the entire process?

Code: Select all

UI ActionButtonDown(id) - Press the specified action button.
UI ActionButtonUp(id) - Release the specified action button.
Source

Surprising to nobody, they protected these LUA functions, as well as others that allowed for true automation in the release of The Burning Crusade.

My opinion?

In the case of BTM Feeder allowing automatic bids to be placed, and having the ability to loop a button press, yeah, perhaps this is a bit overreaching. As for Decursive, I kind of agree that looping through a raid and allowing you to press one button to de-curse the target is a bit too automated. When I think of an acceptable amount of automation, I think of the player being allowed to click on an icon near the player's name, or perhaps modifier+click them as a way to de-curse as this casts the spell for you, and removes half of the work (pressing your hotkey).
