Been thinking about realms today as that's one of my big concerns about Classic. What I'm scared of is that I will pick the 'wrong' realm and all of the fun, active and creative people are all on another realm whilst I am left behind having invested a huge amount of time into a dead server.

We know already that cross-realm grouping, LFR etc. is not going to be a thing - therefore picking the right home will be of the utmost importance for people who care about the core aspect of Classic which is other players.

  • Have Blizzard officially released any information at all about the number and type of realms that will be available?
  • Are there any resources, tools or polls of sorts out there where the Classic community are already choosing realms to go to? (Which would help to indicate which ones will be the most popular).
  • How did famous vanilla realms back in the day actually become so big? Were they just closer to the top of the list or was it complete chance that more people ended up joining them resulting a snowball of population numbers?
  • Can anyone here think of a good solution to this issue that would help fans everywhere to 'pick' a realm early on?

It would kind of suck if everyone says 'oh yeah I'm joining so-and-so server' and then they don't actually make that server in the release. Also I want to avoid the hyper competitive groups like Devilsaur Mafia, Goonswarm etc. who will for certain come back to Classic with a vengeance.

RH there was a topic very similar to this not long ago if you're interested in reading what people said there as well

I'm toying with the idea of doing something like you mention - like a big old list of all the possible/most probable realms in Classic and then letting anyone 'vote' in. Trouble is knowing which realms are likely to make it and which are not, as you have already mentioned.

I guess this is just going to be one of the drawbacks about playing on release as opposed to say six months down the line. The other thing I would love to find in a server (PvP) is as close to a 1:1 A/H ratio as possible.

As far as pre-launch server polls go, I just feel like while it is a good idea theoretically, not enough people will answer in order to provide a realistic picture of population spread.

I have problems deciding on this myself.

PvP always caught my attention, since I enjoy the feeling of 'danger' when being seen by the opposite faction. You never really know what will happen. But on the other side, I do enjoy roleplaying as well. I'm invested in the lore, and enjoy losing myself into the world.

However, I'm not too fond of RP-PvP servers, and that is mainly because if I do roleplaying in a contested zone, you will most likely end up on someone's dinner table. Roleplayers tend to be shat on a lot by other players, which in itself is quite ironic -- nerds hating on other nerds, more or less.

But I do enjoy doing PvP when I'm in that mindset, and I do enjoy roleplay when I'm in that mindset, so I will have to decide between the two.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards PvP more, but that could change.

People shit on them because most of them are not very good PvE players. Every time I looked on wowprogress or something, barely 1/4 of them even step into Mythic whereas on PvP realms it's always about half the guilds there. I'm looking at wowprogress now and RP realms have between 1-5 guilds doing 8/8M whereas good PvP realms have about 40-60 guilds doing 8/8M - with just double the population.

I did this because every time I used to be cross-realmed with anyone from an RP realm for a Timewalking dungeon, they'd be the slowpokes of the group and would start calling me an elitist jerk for demanding they hurry the fuck up in dungeons where you just had to press W and spam abilities in that general direction to win.

Not only that, but they also tend to be the equivalent of SJWs pansies in online games. I still remember laughing my ass off at all the offended daisies when people were doing Project 60 on RP realms and trolling them. A few examples from this thread:

  • Its hard to do anything 'in character' in Stormwind without some level 26 human paladin looking for a group for the Stockades running up and calling you autistic or jumping around being an annoyance or 'dancing suggestively' in your face or some other juvenile shit. Its really gotten bad.
  • So when I see Stormwind and it's not "Divorced Mother of Three Seeks Sexy Lord of the Night for Thrills and Chills in Haunted Castle," and instead it's this super fast yelling match to see who can say "cuck" faster and angrier, I get concerned for what happened to the Stormwind on my server.
  • I encountered one a few hours ago. My guild was doing an event in the Swamp of Sorrows, a random night elf came up to us and called us all gay and retarded. I brought up the fact that they're playing on a RP server and complaining about roleplay, to which they just ended up calling me gay and retarded.

I mean yeah, sure it's terrible but they made it look like RP realms are their own safe-space and it was hilarious to see them try to face the real part of the internet for a short time.

A lot of them also get into ERP to a disgusting extent. I boosted a toon there to try and raid and just tried to get into some actual RP. No, all those memes about sickos in chat weren't just memes.

I, too, struggle greatly with this topic!

The go-to is PvP realms, but to be honest, I've always hated it. Mostly because I've been really bad at PvP - but it's also easy to get roflstomped while leveling as a warrior unless you really git gud.
I kinda want to play a PvE realm - from my time on Nost, and later Elysium, I noticed people being way friendlier there. There's always a guy from a PvP realm calling PvEs carebears and L2P and all that jazz, but mate, you're the one getting ganked in STVietnam right now. I did - DO - enjoy being able to enjoy my questing experience without having to look over my shoulder every ten seconds.
All of my friends have historically played on PvP servers though. Ain't much fun in the long run without friends, tried that the hard way.

Then there are RP realms. I haven't tried them actually, but rumour (reddit) has it that it's a coin toss between an additional friendliness modifier and the same, but IC. If RP-PvP means getting to play and only getting murdered by people with an RP reason, with that meaning fewer 60s trucking around ganking lowbies for shits and giggles, I'm all in. If RP-PvP means PvP but with "Verily, I shall maketh contact between thy beaten corpse and mine testicles in the name of the Alliance! /sit /spit" instead of "bur get shrekt scrub /sit /sit /sit /spit", I'm not so sure...

RP'ing, if just casually, does sound fun though...

I don't blame you at all.

Roleplayers overall tend to be really the sensitive type who indeed, as you put it, think wherever they go needs to be a "safe space."

I have dealt with my own situations of justice warrior-like types who really aren't very enjoyable people at all to deal with. I have done my fair share of roleplay in World of Warcraft, and this past year, in Final Fantasy XIV. I can tell you, the quality of said roleplayers aren't all too amazing since majority of them doesn't really try to fit into the lore, but rather, twist the lore to fit their character.

Many times, I have just started to call it fetish roleplay, rather than roleplay.

Something which is both annoying and sad is that many of these people, roleplayers, deal with all kinds of depressions and situations. Sharing forums or Discord servers with them is close to impossible since a lot of them tend to get triggered by everything, even by things that happens in the game, in the story itself, and if you mention it, you got a whole lot of words coming your way, with the group of, well, white knights following. Many use roleplay as an escape from their depression, which isn't bad by itself, it just becomes horrible when they expect people around them to be some sort of support group, and when that is not the case, there is a shitstorm brewing.

So with that part of roleplayers being ridiculed I don't blame you at all for thinking. Much of what you said is completely true. I guess I can put myself in the actual roleplayer category, which doesn't deal with any of those things mentioned, nor am I interested in writing dirty to strangers.

I guess what I meant by writing this;

I'm looking way, way back to LARP days (disclaimer, I do not, and have not done any LARP myself) where people roleplayed out in the woods, dressing up in medieval-like clothes, wielding plastic swords and the likes.

That is what I meant by 'nerds ridiculing other nerds' because I do remember in games like World of Warcraft, or on forums, people who did LARP/Roleplay were ridiculed for it.

But 'roleplayers' being ridiculed for the things that you stated? I completely understand it, and in fact, roleplayers ridicule them too. Roleplayers don't enjoy the sight of those who do 'cyber' stuff, because it just gives us who wants to actually roleplay, a bad name.

So, I can only apologise for you ending up in groups with those who think an efficient dungeon run is you being an elitist. Kick them if needed, I would have done the same thing.

This, however;
I encountered one a few hours ago. My guild was doing an event in the Swamp of Sorrows, a random night elf came up to us and called us all gay and retarded. I can completely sympathise with the roleplayer, but maybe not to the extent to whine about it.

Yes, "lollers" as people call them come and go, and they do everything they can to be an annoyance in the game world. Most of the time it just works by ignoring them.

Yes, they have all the rights to be in that spot and do whatever, but there is zero politeness by being an annoyance like that, to people who just try to roleplay with their group in a spot.

I’m assuming before launch they’ll release details of server names that will be available at launch and their physical locations as playing across the country from a server can have a significant impact on ms (melee pvp nightmare..)

I’ll personally be playing on a PvP server as close to me as possible and try to persuade my IRL friends to do the same. Ironically most of my friends played Northdale on Alliance but I was a bit late to the party (all of them don’t really log on anymore). I feel pretty sure they’re going Alliance for Classic launch so I’ll be able to prey on all my pals.

Currently playing on Northdale PvP, a Light’s Hope private server and my own closed server. Testing leveling routes, grinding efficiency, and trying to improve personal Hunter speedrun times.

There's some sweeping assumptions in this post. And just general assholery. Also all of those complaints (save the gross erp one) are legitimate. It just looks like the Project 60 fellows were acting like babs. And the fact that you'd defend them is just kinda sad. I really hope you don't play on my server. I like your WPvP guide tho!

As for the subject at hand I'll be playing on an RP-PvP server. I love RPing and I love World PvP so I figure this is perfect for me. Also I know for a fact that the majority of streamers will be playing on PvP servers and I really just want to dodge that whole crowd.

It will be interesting to see how the hyper connected and supported streamers perform. On one hand they’ll have scouts and a constant stream of information, but on the other hand, I reckon any decent server would band together to stomp them if they started getting too greedy

@Kurzogg I am a bit of an asshole, you're right. I'm not saying what they did was right, but it sure was hilarious. The main point was that they are statistically worse at PvE than most other realms. Not that you can't raid on RP realms, but on RP realms it should be statistically:

* harder to find raids
* more difficult to progress with raids
* fewer guilds to choose from if you happen to not get along with one

If retail is of any indication of what types of players sign up for those kind of realms, as in the kind of players who devote more time to RP activities will, most of the times, devote less time to PvE / PvP.

Probably won't play on a RP-PvP realm but I will definitely have an RP section for my guild's history and all of that. I would feel strange if people were not calling me "gay" and "retarded" for taking a full raid to gank Redridge.

I understand that World PvP is a really big part of Classic WoW. For some it's just part of the nostalgia to play on a PvE Server. Maybe they have been there since the beginning.

I, for example, didn't even know what the **** PvE, PvP, PvE-RP really meant in terms of gameplay.

PS: Even though I played Classic on a PvE realm, I probably switch to PvP

Hey Williammunny, from what I’ve heard transfers back in the day were very limited and expensive too. Also I believe one restriction was you could only go PvP to PvE.
