Looks like Blizzard is sending out questions related to TBC Classic and how they would handle how it rolls out.

Thinking about the potential ways a player could start a character in “Classic” Burning Crusade, which of the following would you prefer most?
  • Continue playing my current Classic character on my existing server as it progresses to the Burning Crusade expansion, with the option to transfer to a Classic server that will never progress past 60.
  • Continue playing my current Classic character on my existing server that will never progress past 60, which the option to transfer to a Burning Crusade server.
  • Start a brand new character from Level 58 on a new Burning Crusade server.
  • Start a brand new character from Level 1 on a new Burning Crusade server.
None of the above

do you guys think blizz will speed up content drops so it wouldn't take 2 years to get from launch to BC? How does it look like now, are we getting content faster?

It's real! This is the version of wow I enjoyed the most! Did we start the count down, yet!?
********** Nyxt creates thread "Count down to TBC, January 16, 2021" **************

As soon as it comes out I'm there and even if Wrath comes out I plan on staying on TBC server.
So that's why I don't want them to turn the classic servers into TBC because thats how they would do it for Wrath...

EDIT: Didn't fully read the options, so classic will never disappear when they go to TBC
EDIT: I like option one so it can help remove dead servers in classic by only creating a few you can transfer too, they can control how many to open and who will stay with Classic and who goes on to TBC

There are dozens and dozens of relevant questions to consider, but the release of TBC isn't one of them at this point, it will happen because Blizzard is a company and companies like money and TBC = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. So, Blizzard likes TBC.
The writing was on the wall right after Classic dropped and over-doubled their sub numbers. We will be headed into WoTLK right after TBC. No potential for any other outcome at this point. Because Blizzard is a company.

Release cycle is dictated primarily by player retention at this point. If they see drop offs, they dump new content to retain subs. Remember that we're about 7 months in and past the half-way point content-wise. I could see them going as quickly as 5 months and stretching it for as long as 8 months but I cant see it taking much longer.

Please no... TBC will rejuvenate this site, no need for a new Barrens Chat. I've always looked at the site as a place for Classic discussion, regardless which xpac.

In regards to the questionnaire I am shocked they dont have an option for copying a character: I would like to stay on my current Classic server, that will never progress to TBC and that will be merged with other Classic realms as the population declines, while giving me the option to choose *two of my characters to COPY and add to TBC-specific realms. *could be any number.

I like this option because it doesnt force players to choose and will cause less of a fracture to remaining Classic realms. Dont get me wrong, I know the Classic community will splinter and Classic realms will largely be vacant because FRESH, but without the option to keep toons in Classic the numbers are going to plummet very quickly.

I plan on going into TBC with a warlock and based on the options presented, I think it would be wise to level a fresh 60 on Classic at this point, even if its a replication of your main so that you can keep your Classic progress within Classic and take a FRESH toon to a FRESH realm so that you arent sacrificing your Classic progress for level 61 greens in BC.

More like when they announced Classic.
They brought Vanilla(Classic) back with the mindset of bringing back the other versions/expansions.
Sure the success of vanilla(classic) depends on the release of future versions of the older expansions.

None of these options make sense. The easy, obvious option is just to copy over your characters to the BC server. Or just move the entirety of the servers forward into BC. All this "transfer" stuff seems really dumb.

None of the above.

I wouldn't say that. They were definitely reluctant to pursue Classic and had a lot of doubts early on. This became apparent with their implementation of layering - they just didn't think the project could retain players. Most notably we saw this with the initial servers launched, they simply thought the playerbase would be about 1/5 of the size of what it was. I think Blizzard was very cautious with the Classic project and almost pessimistic to a certain degree. Displaying that they are demonstratively out of touch with their audience. And while their attitude towards Classic hasn't seemed to change all that much, the monetary revenue from the project is undeniable. I think they have finally realized that they have a golden ticket, they just dont understand why (what is the player appeal?) and they dont understand if the success of Classic is repeatable (will TBC do as well?). So I would disagree, they definitely didn't understand the potential for this project when they announced it, when they decided how many servers to launch with and even into the game with layering, where they didnt understand the retention rates - they just had no idea and they still seem to be figuring it out.

Imagine a company that has done business for years with a gigantic organization of developers and employees who are building games... Their overhead is insane. These guys launched retail vanilla with about 60 people. These guys have since had upwards of 5-6000 employees working in various development and support roles. They have had employee cuts numbering in the hundreds. And over the years we have witnessed a steady decline in subscription numbers from WoTLK onwards. And now, in 2019 (aug) a rag-tag skeleton crew of guys re-releasing an existing piece of property that doubles their WoW sub numbers? The bulk of their effort was to merge prexisting and current infrastructure which will allow them to further reduce the manpower on this team going forward. Imagine the profit margins? I would venture to guess that their overhead with Classic was SIGNIFICANTLY less than their original cost of creating retail vanilla, yet their sub numbers were still enormous with Classic. I would further venture to guess that Classic created more net profit, despite its lower sub numbers, than the original release of the game or any other expansion since due to the minimal cost of recreating the product. This is uncharted territory. They. Have. No. Idea... They are NOT prepared.

Quoting for emphasis

I don't know why I didn't think about this, but I have to level a copy of Beardozer now. I do not want to lose my progress on my main when TBC launches, but I want to continue my main into TBC. I don't want a fresh character, I want to continue the one I've spent the past half a year+ building and I'm partial to it by now. My druid is like a pet at this point, I want to see it keep growing and I'm going to take it with me in TBC. But if they do not give me the option to copy it into TBC, then at least I'll have my own level 60 copy of it ready to move into TBC.

I had the idea of cloning the servers upon launch in order to create <server>-Classic and <server>-TBC forks which would split on launch and go their separate ways from that point onward. Everything would be copied, all characters cloned into a new TBC server. My reasoning would be to preserve the community going forward, but realistically the launch of TBC itself would break the community and I think it makes more sense to simply create new ones for TBC. New ones that we copy our Classic characters into, and it can be populated anew with whoever ends up on them, creating the new communities which will exist on them headed into the expansion.

Man I gotta admit I am more excited for this than I was expecting. Classic is my favorite, and I am looking forward to seeing the final raids which I've never seen before. My raid team is tight, pretty much drama-free, full of consistent players, and I see it sticking together through AQ40 and Naxx. It is full of new friends which I have made along the way, and current world situation considered, I am extra glad to have them around right now. We're already talking about taking the team and moving it into TBC. I'm super excited about TBC because there is even more raid content there I never saw the first time around, and I really do look back on the TBC dungeons and experience fondly. I'm not going to worry about where this train is headed, because I'm definitely less excited for wrath and expansions past that. I'm simply going to continue to enjoy the ride and see where it takes me.

Also looking forward to seeing this site come back to life. Hoping things perk back up again now that there's new stuff to talk about

It wouldn't be TBC if you have to start at level 1 at launch.
They said Classic was supposed to have the Vanilla experience, I bet the same when it comes to TBC...

Would not be wise to have everyone to start over.
They would lose alot of people in the process.
In the end it's their decision but I think we will start the TBC experience where we left off in Vanilla Classic, stepping through the portal!
Not sure if they will allow new people to start at 58 but if you have a character at 60 in vanilla classic you should be able to step though the portal and continue your journey like alot of people did when it launched.

I do like the splitting idea!

I would.

I don't think they would go into restoring and taking as long as they did in bringing back Classic like they did, if they knew it was going to fail.
Maybe they didn't know how successful or how much it would help the company with subscriptions.
Why release now, the same people were asking for Blizzard to create vanilla servers like this for years and they said no.
Why August 2019, I think they knew enough that it will be worth the effort.

I read something when they released the demo of classic, that they updated the platform and brought the code up to date from the original 2005 technology. And what they were doing was making it so they could easily bring back/restore any version of WoW. Basically a blueprint in restoring other versions of wow. I believe they had the future in mind when releasing Classic to the world. Maybe not too far into the future but at least the next step if they just released gold. But yes if classic failed then so be it.

Not a good idea at all. Leave classic the way it is, and add new content to it. Make an alternate timeline story where different decisions were made that lead to all new scenarios. Call it Classic+. Keep all the elements of Classic WoW and add new stuff. Worked with Old School Runescape.

You’re contradicting yourself here. In my opinion the success of Classic so far has been it’s attempt at authenticity, not new content.

Whilst Runescape is a good example of successful expansion on ‘Classic’ content, we’re talking about two different games so the comparison isn’t worthwhile making.

There is no contradiction. The issue with retail is that it strayed away from the content that made Classic WoW great. Classic WoW, in my opinion, is the best WoW at its core. People love progression. Once people finish everything in Classic, they're going to want to do more. Old School Runescape is literally the only thing you could compare to Classic WoW in this regard. OSRS kept the core gameplay and added new content, leaving the classic gameplay but entirely new progression. Classic would still retain its authenticity because all of the original content would be there. People do not play Classic because of its authenticity to specific content like MC or BWL, they play it because of the gameplay. People like the sense of accomplishment--how much time and effort you have to put into leveling and getting gear. They like a challenging RPG. Like I said, the comparison between Classic WoW and Oldschool Runescape is the only logical comparison to make at this point. We're running out of ideas, so we're going to re-release TBC. When OSRS released they had no plans on adding all new content--like you said, they wanted the original "authentic" experience. But once people realized they needed progression, new content succeeded it. And I think, if you're an avid Vanilla WoW player, you would love to see a Classic+ experience. You would like to see a completely new narrative and keep the Vanilla WoW core. Keep everything the same and add more regions/raids/quests. That's what we all want.
