I've been dabbling on private servers like RetroWoW and Elysium, and I've been having a lot of fun with Holy Priest for raiding and such. I'm quite familiar with the spec as a whole, but I was wondering... Is Shadow really THAT much better for leveling? Most places recommend it, but is it a slight boost in efficiency to negligible?

Leveling speed is "experience gain" + downtime = /played to 60
So, what talents will make you kill monsters faster, to gain more experience?
https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=14524 ... ialization in Disiplince tree
https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=14909/searing-light and https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=14901 ... l-guidance in Holy tree
aswell as https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15257/shadow-weaving / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15286 ... ic-embrace / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=27839 ... ic-embrace / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15259/darkness / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15270/spirit-tap / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15275 ... -word-pain / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15273 ... mind-blast / https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15407/mind-flay and ofc https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15473/shadowform in the Shadow tree.
The shadow tree will make your damage output better, saving you time while leveling. And the guides tells you to pick shadow for all the difirent talents, instead of the "few" in the other trees.
So for leveling purposes, any tree will do fine, leveling without talents are also viable. But to get a faster /played to 60, then the small boosts from the talents will make your downtime, less.

I figured as much. I'll be ignoring my professions entirely at first, seeing as I'll be going Herbalism/Alchemy. This character is going to be designed to blitz to 60 alone, so I'm likely going to just roll Shadow and search for some guides on that. Besides, it'll be a first for me.

If you whana blitz, go https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=14524 ... ialization with the first pionts and focus on wand upgrades during leveling. Make spirit as your main stat, becuse of the https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15270/spirit-tap talent. Then at 40, respec for https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=15473/shadowform ( respec cost would be 1g ) then back to https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=14524 ... ialization
And make sure you know when and how to spend mana, it's both damage and self healing. Try to not sit down and drink.
