Hey guys,

RedridgeGnoll's thread made me think about different memorable moments that you can have in the world PvP. It reminded me a little bit of DayZ, where you fight for your survival with other people and apart from the loot, there is no basically reason to kill other people. I know it's not that relevant to WoW, but I just like to think about all the dangerous situations I have survived and I'm proud of it. So let's share the experience that you had during vanilla!

Maybe you were going back to hand in some quests and ambushed by someone, but someone rescued you. Stuff like that.

(Frankly, I never played vanilla WoW but I'd like to hear your stories!)

Shameless self-promotion but checkout my guide on how organize World-PvP raids in Classic for a bit of insight and some funny stories/gifs/videos.

Off-topic but to me RedridgeGnoll is a troll at this point. I mean 99% of the replies in his threads disagree with him, he keeps asking for Ashran in Classic WoW thread after thread.

My first memory of PvP was running my level 12 ass from dun mogogh into the wetlands and getting trucked over by some ?? level horde characters who were en route to god knows where. I was only a few hours into the game at that point and didn't know wtf was going on. I turned around and went back into dun morogh for a while after that, lol.

I don't think he's trolling. I think he's got some misguided ideas and probably is a better fit on retail where things change all the time, but I don't think he's trolling. Farming post count maybe, but if shitposting is wrong then I don't wanna be here

One time I was slowly and painfully leveling my warrior in shimmering flats. I'm half-dead and impotently smacking a turtle when another warrior that's got ~4 levels on me smells easy pickings and charges in. Of course my immediate reaction is "Great, I'm dead" but retaliation is up so I pop it and a few seconds later I'm staring in disbelief as the ganker lays dead at my feet. Judging by how long they took to spirit release they couldn't believe it either.

Most delicious cannibalize of my life.

My first and probably most formative pvp experiences came while grinding mobs in the late 20s early 30s. I was playing a rogue and some alliance paladin was apparently using the same guide as me because we went back and forth killing each other while grinding the same mobs across multiple zones on both continents, over the course of about a week. Every day I'd see this dude and we traded off killing each other like it was cool. I was hooked on pvp from that point on and wpvp continues to be my favorite part if the game to this day.

Summer 2005. June 6 to be exact. The biggest Horde leveling guild on Bonechewer <Mighty Peons> threatened to set Southshore aflame and control it for the entire night. A merciless war in Southshore between <Mighty Peons> and my guild was waged. We were utterly outnumbered, and right before midnight we managed to extinguish <Mighty Peons> and banish them from the small town by the Hillsbrad shore. The next day was June 7. Battlegrounds were released and that was the end of World PvP.

Don't you mean "They got bored and went to bed"? The Horde can never be extinguished!

This is very similar to Lendryn's story.

Wetlands, level 30. I was working on the Felhunter quest for my Warlock when I accidentally over-pulled and ended up fighting four of the Orcs at once. You know that feeling, that internal sigh as you fear a mob and it runs into another. As I saw the fourth Orc rush to aid his friends I resigned myself to defeat, "I'm dead here" went through my mind, but I thought I'd at least take a few with me. After an intense but surprisingly controlled fight I managed to kill them, but I came out OOM and at about 20% HP. My Voidwalker also went down like a hero but no worries, I can tap, re-summon and then eat/drink.

That's when I saw It.

If it weren't for a casual glance to see where the next group of mobs were I would not have noticed It. It was right there on the ridge; tiny legs, pig-tailed hair, red name tag.

And It was casting something at me. The blue hands gave it away: Frostbolt.

All too soon, "I'm dead here" went through my mind again.

An automatic response of mine was to target It and express my distaste but before I could even formulate my /spit I noticed something that set wheels turning in my mind. It was only level 23. I blinked. Suddenly I wanted to spite It, deny It it's cheap thrill of putting me in the ground while I was weak. The feeling only grew in me, intensely I desired to spoil It's scheme more than I cared about staying alive myself.

My heart began to thump noticeably as the frostbolt struck. Fireblast. I was barely alive but nothing mattered as long It doesn't kill me. I still had a healthstone and health potion left from the fight before so I hastily consumed both, fingers almost missing the keys in desperation. Frost Nova. I had just barely clawed enough mana back to afford to cast fear which was timely, as it interrupted the next frostbolt.

Life Tap. Immolate. Corruption. Curse of agony. With wand in hand I smiled; by the time fear dropped It knew as well as I did that this fight was far from over. However my smile was put in check after the next frostbolt was a critical strike. It wanted me dead, I was reminded. But I was not prepared to undertake a corpse run for this opportunistic thug. I had to use everything. Burning with a sense of righteous indignation I re-feared and bandaged.

It also had a health potion and in restoring Itself to about 50% I knew I had to life tap again, despite the risk. Another frostbolt climbed into me, followed up by another fireblast. No crits this time, but I was still uncomfortably low. My heart was trying to escape my chest as I began to cast shadow bolt, I knew my highest rank of shadow bolt would obliterate this lower level but at the same time it cost just about as much mana as I had left. It all rested on that spell.

The bolt struck home and seeing that portrait flash red is the closest I can imagine how a shark must feel after smelling blood. There was a moment I distinctly remember where a realisation hit us both about who the hunter and who the hunted had become. I had turned the tables. It stopped casting another frostbolt and instead tried to run. I was without mercy.

I stood over the broken husk of my enemy and, lost to the lust of battle and with victory coursing through my veins almost as potent as the adrenaline, I smote my finger upon the only key on my keyboard that seemed to exist in that moment.

It was the most satisfying cannibalise I think I've ever experienced.

I would have happily put that little punk in the ground all day for trying to gank me but I really wanted to get what I needed and get gone before someone higher came along. Never saw him again though you're right!

In my experience Battlegrounds were released and that was the end of World PvP ON MY SERVER/FOR ME. <--Don't speak for everyone
Again with this, wrong thread, here made it more accurate!

On Topic: I had a decked out shadow priest but at the time I was leveling a rogue in un'goro (Off topic: After Battlegrounds were released, hint hint gnoll) and this level 60 rogue ganked me and was camping me. So I logged on my Priest which i parked in Un'goro and mounted over and killed the rogue and camped him! Soon after two of his horder friends came to help him so I went on guild chat and got a few of my friends over and it started a mini war! (Off Topic: World PVP happening after Battlegrounds were out wink wink).

On Topic: Also I remember being at Lumber Mill in a AB. And I mind controlled a horde player, which happened to be an undead (bad idea). I was running him to jump off the cliff but he somehow broke it early, wonder how lol, and instead of throwing him off the cliff I accidentally threw myself off the cliff! LOL I couldn't stop laughing and was so embarrassed to even continue lol

Surely it's just a coincidence, there couldn't have been possibly any world pvp after BGs were out :surprised:

Impossible. The battlegrounds had been released by then and world PvP was illegal. How did you pull this off without getting caught by a blizzard GM and getting sent to the jail on GM island?

I was made! I had connections with one of the Frontier Playstyle Enforcement Officer's and he did not report me!

I remember a handful of times when some IRL friends of mine and I would go "raid" Goldshire. The group was typically me (a warrior) and my mage friend, and sometimes a couple of rogues. We'd meet up in STV and swim up the river through Duskwood into Elwynn. I remember at the time feeling like we were commandos in Vietnam or something, swimming through a Horde-unfriendly contested zone. We never really did any serious damage of course. This was before the honor system so we got away with killing some low-level civilians and PvP flagged newbies.

I remember specifically one of the "raids" being right after I hit 40. I was the first one of us to hit 40, and with 2 crappy pieces of plate I felt like an absolute god. I remember fighting some Dwarf priest in town who I think was in this 50s and "almost" killing him. Looking back, obviously he was just playing with his food, but it was fun for the memory at least.
