Do you guys think that our forums namesake will make a full return when Classic drops? Barrens general chat is infamous, but much of its infamy and character came out of contemporary internet culture and memes circa 2004. Internet culture has moved on significantly since then. How similar will the new incarnation be to the OG this time around do you think? For instance, I haven't heard a Chuck Norris joke in years.
Obviously, many of the factors that helped Barrens chat become what it was will still be there. It's a quest hub for pretty much all of the Horde at some point or another, and lasts for a significant chunk of levels, so there will be loads of people there. It'll certainly be full of shitposting if for no other reason than tradition.

I think it'll still be fun, but with way more comedic try-hards.

It's either gonna be better than it used to be or way, way, WAY worse. Right now in Beta it seems like everyone is nostalgic of the old barrens chat. Lots of norris jokes going around etc... Who knows how that changes in retail though. I imagine streamer servers' barrens chat will be vastly different from servers folks use to escape streamers and their crowds.

If the layers share chats (which I really hope they do not) then it will be probably more like twitch chat than anything.
Otherwise I expect it to be very similar in the beginning, maybe a little bit wild when the main bulk of players progresses there. Mid- to short term heavily depends on how the game (and the community) in general turns out to be. I cant really see it being that bad though.

Yeah that's it really. It became famous for being a focal point of internet culture but only because of the vast amount of players that were subjected to it in vanilla as you say. I sometimes wonder what would have happened had barrens not been such a large zone - what would have been the next-biggest local chat in the game after that?Vyakavish wrote: ↑5 years agoObviously, many of the factors that helped Barrens chat become what it was will still be there. On a side note, I remember wanting to start a forum for wow classic but really couldn't think of anything good at the time. I was first sidling towards something SEO friendly like 'wowclassicforum.com' or something like that but hesitated because it just sounded so dull. Then the idea hit me and I searched for 'barrenschat.com', which I think was available. Then the eshop's suggestion thing spat out 'barrens.chat' using the new .chat type domain - perfect! I bought it there and then. That was a real motivator for me to get working

Yea the domain name thing is perfect. It really worked out. We've got a good thing going here, I think. Good aesthetic.

I just had the thought, there's not going to be any real way to tell who is actually looking for Mankrik's wife and who is trying to be a goddamn comedian.

This is what I expect. This is how it is on private. The beauty of OG barrens chat was that we had a TON of diversity packed into one zone. You had a wide level spread, with vetran players leveling alts and new players who hadn't played and MMO. Most of the younger players were stuck in the level 1-30 range so the maturity level was a bit more shallow. There werent as many resources to find information, and the resources we had (Thottbot) were questionable sources of information at the best of times. This all equated to a TON of players chatting and fun times were had.
In Classic, most players will be using addons like questie, and whether you are or arent using it, you will see others around you interacting with quests and finding the answers to your quests will be intuitive whether youre experienced or not. The average player age demographic for Classic will be a bit higher. Depending on layering each section of barrens could be its own separate chat which will vastly reduce the quantity of idiots in any given location. These factors, among various other factors will likely water down barrens chat from what it was. I'm not sure if thats good or bad though hahaha.

While STV is well engrained in everyones mind as a PvP haven, it never really captured the same General Chat shenanigans, despite its monstrous level range and size/popularity. The only thing in general chat was selling pages of green hills of stranglethorn and PvP announcements. I find that odd thinking back on it now.

What does Chuck Norris do when there is a meteor shower? - He Grabs a bar of soap.
Chuck Norris has a bear rug in his cabin, the bear isn't dead, it's just too afraid to move.
Chuck Norris died years ago, death just hasn't built up the courage to tell him yet.
There. :)

I really hope it’s not going to turn into a twitch chat, but it’s depending a lot about the time of day imo. I had a great time chatting with people late at night when the younger playerbase had gone to bed. Now I think if you want that you’ll have to avoid going there whenever a streamer is playing there, given his audience is also playing with him & spamming both /general and twitch chat. But honestly /trade was just as bad sometimes as twitch is nowadays
