Hello, Barrens chat community!
Around a month ago, someone on Discord recommended this forum to me and I've only just now gotten around to checking it out. I have to say, I'm impressed; Not much toxicity here or controversy, just good 'ol-timey' vibes and I can respect that!
I, myself, first played WoW back when 3.3.5a was live, or more-so the tail-end of it's life. Since then, I've been jumping around on private servers, dabbling in both ends of the spectrum from player to junior developer. Nowadays, when I do play, I find myself on 1.12 servers more than anything, highly anticipating the day Classic WoW comes to light and hoping it does not arrive with micro-transactions, otherwise I won't be touching it so let's cross our fingers and hope they don't add those, aye? ^^
Anyways, for almost the past year, I've been developing a "game"/project coined World of Warcraft 2D. The project is aimed to essentially be a 2D re-creation of 1.12 World of Warcraft. Here are a couple of screenshots of my work so far:
World of Warcraft 2D is written in C# on-top of the MonoGame engine and is open-source. As of right now, the project will not feature any custom "2d wow" assets as my art skills are not very well endowed and don't have the funds to pay an artist. All assets I'm using are royalty-free aside from the race/class icons which I will re-draw myself before the pre-alpha release in the future. However, all NPC, mob, location, etc,. names will remain those found in WoW.
You may also join the Discord sever if you wish!
It is far, far from finished but I'm optimistic about it's future as well as Classic WoW :)
Yo @Xolitude! I saw this project of yours on ac-web.org a while back - looks like it's shaping up nicely! I wish I could post there but the mods never approve my posts - it's been months of trying now lol.
You should check out what @Defuzed is doing with his Textcraft project which is in a similar vein to what you've been making.
Cool to see so many talented developers here working on various creative ventures like this.
By the way, if you need free graphical resources - maybe the tech resources part of this site will be useful for you?
Reading through your post I had to laugh a little bit, because it reminded me of myself a few years ago :) I also tried to create my own little game for the whole purpose of fun and learning - a replica of diablo 2 (one of manys hehe). I enjoyed that time very much and I learned many things, not only development-wise.
Sadfuly after a few months I had to stop working on that project because I had no time due to work and RL so I never finished it.
With that said, I encourage you to keep going with what you love and enjoy! If that project is something that should help you to get into the industry I wish you the best of luck!
Looking really cool and reminds me of stein.world. Hope you keep up the work with a monster of WoW classic so near ;)
If you need testers just hit me up, love to test games and giving feedback, just look @defuzed textcraft
Aye-o, @teebling! It's funny you mention the lack of post approvals on AC-Web; I had to nearly spam the Administrators team with DMs for approval and it still took around ~3 weeks for them to accept me. Needless to say, I was very unamused
I just went and had a look at it! Before starting this project, I actually had that same idea except I was going to make it as a windows application but I just couldn't wrap my head fully around the idea and how it would work but his work is very impressive! Web development has always interested me, I've just never taken the time to jump on it and give it a whirl but I could learn a lot from @Defuzed. I think I'll spend some time on Textcraft and give him some feedback!
Also, thank you for the link to the Tech center of the website, I'll certainly have a look there :)
Hello there, @apexz!
I love how you say this because when I started this project, my whole goal was to kind of get a laugh out of people :) Ugh, Diablo 2 is one of my all-time favourite games next to Age of Empires 2 and OoT. I respect that very much and I'd love to see screenshots of how far you got. It's amazing the type of inspiration that games like WoW and Diablo can cause.apexz wrote:Reading through your post I had to laugh a little bit, because it reminded me of myself a few years ago :)
Game development (even though I've never released one yet) is something I'd only like to enjoy as a hobby if anything. Software engineering is more my style in terms of the business world but I appreciate it and I'll be carrying it with me in my portfolio :)apexz wrote:If that project is something that should help you to get into the industry I wish you the best of luck!
Thank you, @IronBrutzler! I had no idea what Stein World was until I read your post and it looks very neat! I actually took inspiration from Ocarina of Time 2D when I started last August. I just loved the concept of turning a 3D game into something 2D to any-degree and I thought WoW was a good place to start even with it's monstrous size :)
With Classic WoW releasing, it'll push me to build WoW-2D even more-so because I'll be able to make it as accurate as possible in terms of questing and the general feel. I'll certainly keep you in mind if I need testers, I very much appreciate that :)
Ah, thank you for catching that! The one on the README.md is outdated as it was the one I used for the Java version which is now archived. Here is the updated and most current one: WoW-2D Trello
Uh! Thats cool, im looking forward for this :)! Good Luck, amazing project!
