I finished college, got my degree (in animal management), completed the mandatory military service (9 months as military police in the marines), got a job on the other side of Europe, moved there and started working full time (caring for 44 cats), far away from friends and family but at least the barrens chat is always there for me. Going on holiday in July to see my family and friends back home. Recently discovered that one of the cats has a tumor on her skeleton and has possibly a few weeks, maybe a month or two left to live so that's really unfortunate. Weather was nice and sunny today. :)

Whereabouts are you my man? I'm in a suburb of Portland myself.Escalotes wrote: ↑6 years agoThanks for the inviteJon Bloodspray wrote: ↑6 years agoWent to a horror convention in Seattle with my fiance this weekend, it was a fun time. Saturday morning I headed out by myself to hike Mt. Teneriffe. Amazing view from the top of that one. I took a "shortcut" via the aptly named Kamikaze Trail and I'm so sore now. That section is almost 2400 ft elevation gain in only 1.5 miles!![]()
We seriously need to have a PNW LAN at some point.

I am working on my masters degree in Media and Communication studies right now. Quite literally writing a thesis about memes, which surprisingly enough was okay with my supervisor. So I'm having a good time. Looking forward to a internship at a PR firm during the summer and fall. The only game I really play atm is Zelda BotW, which is a goddamn masterpiece and I am happy I bought myself a Switch.
Holy shit that is the dream.

I really want a Switch, but I'm getting older and my backlog isn't getting any shorter. I resubbed to retail in a drunken haze late last week, ran MC once to try and get one of the pets, then joined an LK private server. I really want to play Classic but as we've talked about other places I don't want to burn out on it before launch. I'm still banging away at Witcher 3 and Risk of Rain 2 and don't want to start anything else until I finish Witcher 3. Is anyone else playing Risk of Rain 2? I've pretty much just been soloing Prismatic Trials.
This weekend I was at retro game store and snagged Castelvania 3: Dracula's Curse. Excited to find some time to go down nostalgia lane with that one.

Witcher 3 is a fantastic game, and I am considering getting all the DLC for it once I am finished with Zelda. They're surprisingly similar some ways; in both some enemies can just absolutely wreck you if you're not careful. I always remembered Zelda as a casual game but running into regular mobs that straight up one shotted me in the early game unless I was heavily buffed really kicked the game up a notch.Jon Bloodspray wrote: ↑6 years ago

On a slightly separate note, I’ve heard the books that inspired the Witcher series are amazing. Polish author.
RL update for me I’m deep into revising for a big exam in 20ish days which is for general navigational mathematics, ship stability calcs, celestial navigation calcs, tidal prediction calcs and maritime legislation. Woopdy fucking doo

I own the full game with all the DLCs... Maybe I should actually play it sometime before classic release so I finally know what all the hype is about.

Leaving my current position next Monday for another that'll be paying 60% more at base rate. Hopefully this position will lead into my main career objective, which I've heard from others that it usually does. Also pretty much done remodeling the room that is to be my study/den, complete with 6 very well done posters of some of my favorite movies and a Lego Saturn V. Then I'm debating if I want to spend another ~$300 this year on a VIP pass to see Weird Al when he comes to town this Summer (went last year, met him, cool guy).
From the slackened maw of the beast can only come chaos and destruction. Defend your people!

Have had a crazy year (marriage and got a kid) and an even crazier spring!
Moving from Sweden to Norway this month after getting a much better job there back in April. Been at my last job for over 9 years.. Looking forward to the change in both work and country!
Will be a challenge to juggle wife, kid, new job, new language and classic!

I am just the average student, got back into studying last fall, studying my first year in Mathematical Engineering. I'm kinda scared that I won't have time for classic.
Good luck in Norway, fellow Swede! Hope the moving work out for you. Luckly, the languages are so similar.Shellzor wrote: ↑6 years agoHave had a crazy year (marriage and got a kid) and an even crazier spring!

Ah student life, had a blast back in my student days! Try to enjoy it!

Ah, I'm also on the good ol' exam grind. For me, it's going to be a couple exams on different programming languages, one on internet infrastructure and a 4-hour written exam on algorithms, yikes! Tidal prediction sounds tough. Good luck to you!

Internet infrastructure - it’s a series of tubes!!
Thanks, and to you too!

Hey guys an off-topic update. I did my navigation and operations exams and they went okay. Definitely passed stability and cargo, not sure about navigation (was a weird ass question). I'm free for the next 4 days to do some work on the site and play some beta

Just finished 2nd year of Uni (studying Physics). Next year is when my grades start counting towards my Bachelors, so I'll have to work a lot harder come September! Sadly also means I have 3 months to wait for Classic this summer and not much in the ways of plans, and I've lived frugally enough to not have to work very much if at all.
That's great! Enjoy the beta while you can! I've heard (unfounded) rumours that they will be moving the level cap up relatively soon.

I hated my job when I worked on a ship, but I did like being at sea. Your posts about it make me miss it, a tiny bit.
I recently remembered an old work acquaintance of mine is working at Blizzard now and basically begged him to see if he could get me a beta invite. Fingers crossed!

Can you add my Btag info to your begging?Jon Bloodspray wrote: ↑5 years agoI recently remembered an old work acquaintance of mine is working at Blizzard now and basically begged him to see if he could get me a beta invite. Fingers crossed!

In what capacity were you at sea? US flagged vessels?

Yeah, I worked for a cruise line that circled the Hawaiin islands. We never left U.S. waters so we were U.S. flagged, which means that I had to be trained as a Merchant Marine to work on the ship. It was real basic training and I was the absolute lowest rank (called class 1 wiper if I remember correctly), Somewhere on the internet is a picture of my ID card, I totally look like a drug smuggler (greasy hair slicked back, white v-neck t-shirt, black high collared jacket...). I worked in the galley and was treated like shit by the rest of the crew. The actually sailors were cool, but the cruise line crew can fuck right off. Still, seeing a volcano from sea and smoking a cigarette on the mooring deck during a typhoon while 20-30 ft waves were breaking against the ship and washing over my feet is something I'm glad I experienced.

I've been a Deck Cadet for the last three years so I can sympathise with this. Literally the scum at the bottom of a barrel.Jon Bloodspray wrote: ↑5 years agoI worked in the galley and was treated like shit by the rest of the crew
This is the ship I've spent most of my time on - by August, if all goes well, I'll be qualified to drive it

Dive support vessel - we do deep sea diving work on the rigs and pipelines in the North Sea mainly. Seen some weather on that barky - a rogue wave 20m high (60ft for you 'muricans) hit the front of us and stoved in the helideck forward. Can get rough out there sometimes. Also did some plain weather sailing from Denmark to Australia (9 week's steam) and seen some insane shit at sea like phosphorescent algae and weird rip tides. I made a post about it last Christmas just before I signed off - deployed a few barrens.chat patches over the ship's satellite internet during that sail!

Nice! I briefly thought about going on to actually be a full Merchant Marine, but decided I'm a bit too much of an anti-establishment individual to commit to that route.
I worked on this girl:
I was also on a fire team, which was a great learning experience and I really enjoyed. Ship board fire fighting and disaster response is really something else.

Huge congrats on your engagement!!!
I work as a 9-1-1 operator, thats why im so chatty and type lots. Its also probably why I can be such an insufferable cunt.
