I found myself at the bottom of a crypt. Barring few torches and candles, it was very dark – as you’d expect. Unexpectedly however, I could see everything clearly. I must have been down here for some time. The dry fetor was filling up the air, making it hard to breathe…
Hold on… breathe…? I… I can’t breathe.. I CAN’T BREATHE!
No.. wait.. that’s right. I can’t breathe. I don’t breathe. I’m not that person anymore. Can I even call myself that, a person?
Willow… That was her name. Long, golden hair. Pink cheeks with blue eyes. Skin soft like silk. It feels odd talking about myself in third person, yet somehow fitting. The willow trees bloom no longer. The spring an eternity away. On this day, Gallow is born.
After narrowly avoiding being burned “alive”, I head out to the nearest settlement. Deathknell, as it’s called, was overrun by the Scourge. The village sought my aid, so I ran outside looking for “fresh meat”. I did not know why.

It seemed that others were making quick work of the nearby Scourge, and my help was not all that necessary. Still, I yearned for something to do. It seemed that someone or something was forcing me to protect this settlement that I didn’t know until few moments ago. Was it thankfulness – for not being burned? I did not know. Ravenous, I looked around. Few rabid wolves and duskbats were lurking in the shadows beneath the trees. They would suffice.

After killing a few of them and collecting their parts, I was able to trade the pelts and skins for some copper, I ditched my shield and bought myself a new weapon. It felt heavy at first, but soon enough became second nature. This time I went after the Scarlet Crusade. I didn’t need any additional excuse to go after them, but apparently they were already spying on us, passing information back to somewhere called Scarlet Monastery to the far east. With the help of a Rogue, I quickly dispatched them and their leader, and recovered a piece of intelligence.

These Crusaders were not only spying on us, but they also had Vital Information on another town called Brill to the north-east. I had to warn them about this, so I left the relatively secure gates of Deathknell and made my way to Brill….

I had finally arrived at Brill. The town clearly had seen better days; the houses were fairly old and made from wood that was all but rotten. The graves just outside stood in eerie silence as a constant reminder of the Plague, more than half unmarked. Yet the townsfolk were still adamant. Oft running patrol through the unbarricaded gloomy meadows, trying to defend Brill from its many foes; both the living and the dead.
The Magistrate of Brill, Sevren, was particularly worried about a recent Gnoll invasion from the north. These good-for-nothing creatures were coming at night and stealing the corpses from the graves. Their leader Maggot Eye was using these corpses to bolster the defenses of the Scourge!

This was low, even for the Gnoll standards. I had to make sure that the poor people of Brill were no longer tormented by this beast. Before heading out, I sorted out my inventory, and even got trained in the arts of skinning. The extra hides would come in handy when bargaining for some pieces of weapon or armor.
I also stopped by the Inn to catch some gossip. Taverns are a great place if you want to hear recent developments in their surrounding areas; even the Forsaken can get drunk and spill their guts. Now that I think about it… where do the drinks go? Anyway… This Inn – unironically called Gallow’s End – housed some regulars who were ready to talk. They even had a nurse called Neela, but no matter how hard I tried she would not train me how to bandage myself at a lower cost.
That bitch.

As I was making my way to the north, I heard a scream somewhere from the far west. Someone was surely in trouble, so I readied my sword and started running towards the sound. As I drew closer, I could make out the sounds of flame melting flesh, and the low grumbles of dying zombies. I saw a Forsaken, throwing fireballs and ice bolts and what have you at zombies from far away, but he was being surrounded. I quickly ran to his side, chopping any zombies that came in between.
Remixt the Forsaken Mage, that was his name. I learned that he was culling that farm of the mindless zombies that recently started rising from their graves. The plague had already made the soil barren and unfit for cultivation, so the last thing the people needed was a zombie infestation. Remixt shared a scroll with me, a recruitment post promising few silver coins to anyone that collected enough claws from the ravaged. I joined in his quest for zombie ravaging, and we quickly bonded.

In the tavern, I’d heard a rumor that mages could conjure food simply out of thin air. I asked Remixt if this was indeed the case. He had apparently heard about this power as well, but needed to consult with a Mage Trainer once he was a bit stronger. So I halted my quest for Gnollocide and decided to accommodate Remixt on his journey to Brill.
Once back in town, the forsaken mage sought the wisdom of his trainer, and indeed he was able to learn this power. He gave me some muffins that he just created. I know I had been dead at this point for some time now, but these muffins tasted…. different. I wouldn’t really call myself full even after eating a bunch of them! I shall neither confirm nor deny that the fact most of the food just fell out of my chest cavity may be related to this issue.
Nevertheless I was thankful to Remixt for the free food. In order to repay him, I wanted to help him in his quest for collecting some pumpkins on the far-west. This farming land was further away from Brill, and thus was not affected by the Plague as badly as the previous one. The human farmers – guarded by the Scarlet Warriors – were raising these huge pumpkins.

I stood by Remixt while he looted the pumpkins, and then we then made our way to the tower in the north. The area was teeming with Scarlet warriors! They were dangerously close to Deathknell, and having control of the tower meant that they could see or signal ships approaching the shore. We went in and started to climb the tower, hoping to secure some of their valuables.

Unfortunately the scarlets had left us nothing to loot. We searched for their corpses for anything salvageable, and used our Hearthstones to head back to Brill to report our victory. By selling the few pelts I skinned, I could finally train how to properly bandage myself.

I realized that taking the Maggot Eye head on could be a dangerous task, so I ditched my two-handed sword and bought a sword and a shield. Remixt was even nice enough to provide me with some silver. Maybe the humanity was not dead after all.
As per my original plan, we went to the Gnoll-infested lands north of Brill. On our venture, we came across an abandoned shack. Sadly this place too was devoid of any loot, aside from few molted cheese in a container. After fighting our way of what seemed to be endless waves of Gnolls, we finally spotted him. The creature that caused so much misery to the people of Brill. The Maggot Eye. Although he was guarded with few Gnolls just outside of his hut, him and his minions were no match against Gallow and Remixt.

The hut was built on the edges of a sloping cliff, overlooking the shore. The shore was overrun by murlocs. The murlocs are water-loving fish-like creatures, so rarely do they venture into inlands. They were far enough to pose little to no threat to Forsaken settlements. But still, I hate fish. The only good fish is either a dead fish, or a dying fish. Surely they outnumbered us one to hundred, but we had just killed the Gnoll leader, the ruthless Maggot Eye. What harm could these flimsy creatures do to us?

Remixt died.
Well….. Okay…. I mean… Okay.. Though we did manage to kill a rare murloc that was far too stronger than us! Still I cried over the loss of this forsaken mage who I became very fond of. Luckily for him, the graveyard was not far enough.
And… what is that.. TWO GREEN ITEMS?? A https://classic.wowhead.com/item=8178/training-sword that does triple the damage of my current weapon! Remixt was too good for me, he just handed me the weapon with no expectations. He was too good for the entire world. I’m sorry that I couldn’t protect you, Remixt. He had a heart of gold, for sure.

I wanted to see how good of a weapon this Training Sword was on some murlocs, however Remixt had different ideas….

That MONSTER.
After returning to Brill, we reported our victories on the Gnolls and murlocs. The Maggot Eye was a threat no more. We took a well-deserved rest.

Nowadays this godforsaken area is full of haunted, rotten windmills and long-abandoned shacks.

When the scourge attacked Lordaeron, the Agamand family had stayed put and defended their home valiantly… is probably what they would tell you. Only The Forsaken know the reality; they hid behind locked doors while their farmhands defended their property. The scourge quickly overran the mills, and killed everyone, turning everyone into undead. Few were able to break free from the curse, and the ones that could ended up taking up refuge in Brill, patiently waiting the day to take revenge on their former bosses.

One restless Forsaken that was plotting on taking revenge was Coleman. He used to work in the Agamand Mills as their farmhand, and much like his fellow workers, his fate was sealed when the Agamands ordered him to defend their home. Coleman clearly did not forgive the Agamands, as he wanted me to kill the four remaining family members; Gregor, Nissa,Thurman and Devlin.

I made my way to Agamand Mills, killing and skinning any beasts I stumbled upon. Silver was slowly becoming an issue. Perhaps I should learn how to fish and cook for myself…
After climbing the slope leading to the windmills, I came across Devlin Agamand. He was cackling as he was patrolling the woods. His laughter was quickly silenced so I ventured further to find the remaining family members. Just outside of Nissa’s home, I noticed something stuck to the side of the slain Darkeye Bonecaster. It was https://classic.wowhead.com/item=2839/a ... -to-yvette , its seal broken.

The letter was from Thurman Agamand and its recipient was Yvette Farthing. Needless to say it never reached her. It read:
I was confused. Coleman had portrayed the Agamand family as nothing but monsters, using their servants as pawns against the Scourge. But were they really the ones to be blamed? Did the Agamands have any other choice? Was Coleman even aware of Devlin’s betrayal?Dearest Yvette,
I will entrust this letter to our fastest runner. I pray he can find a way through the forces surrounding us. And I pray you read these words, for they are the last you will hear of me.
My only comfort in these dark days is the relief I feel, knowing that you are free of my fate.
I fear my father made a grave error when he decided to remain and defend our home. The forces of the Scourge rage through Tirisfal Glades, and although we are well fortified and well stocked, after the betrayal of my brother Devlin we lack the strength and numbers to withstand their continued assault.
If you receive this letter, Yvette, then know that Devlin is a traitor.
Devlin despaired and sought an escape from our ill fortunes, and in doing so he made a pact with the Scourge. I do not know what price was promised him for his betrayal, but I’m sure it was laced with lies.
If you see my brother, then flee from him. He is a fiend. A few nights ago he murdered two of our watchmen and let a small group of Scourge through the breach. Leading them to where many more of us slept.
Their ambush was brutal. They slew a third of us before we could take them down. Now, we barely have enough men to watch our borders. It is only a matter of time before our wearying guard drops and the Scourge attack.
And although I saw Devlin’s face amidst the desperate men and gaunt-faced Scourge on that cursed night, he slipped away before I could catch him. He might be dead, or he might still live as an agent of the Scourge.
Either way, he is a monster.
Devlin warned us that if we tried to face the Scourge, then we were doomed. He told us this when they first entered Tirisfal Glades, well before they encircled our home. Perhaps he was pleading with us to leave, or perhaps he was gloating.
It was always hard to understand Devlin’s motives. Since he was a child, he was a mystery to us.
But he was right. We are doomed. The Agamand family line will end. Although I still live, I know I will soon be dead.
I am not afraid, and I do not regret remaining with my family. But my last thoughts will be of you.
Live on, my beloved Yvette, and I will find peace.
- Thurman
With these questions in my mind, I’ve dealt with the remaining three family members and made my way back to Brill. Coleman was delighted to know about the death of Agamands. He even asked whether they feared me before I killed them. They… actually did. It seemed that Coleman’s revenge was taken, but he was far from being sated.

Yvette showed some emotion to the news of the letter, albeit for a short time. It seemed that she did love Thurman once. But that was a long time ago, now long forgotten. According to her, emotions had no place in the life of a Forsaken.
I wondered whether I agreed with that. I tried remembering the life I had before the Plague. I could see the green pastures, adorned with grapevines. I could hear the children running around the farmlands, and the angry farmers chasing them. Yet no matter how hard I tried, I could no longer smell the grapevines, nor picture the faces of the children. That Willow was long gone. Finished. Forever.
Coleman on the other hand, was not finished with me. In addition to collecting some Agamand family heirlooms, he also asked me to see Magistrate Sevren once again. Sevren notified me about Captain Dargol, a skeleton that mastered the use of Necromancy, living in the Agamand Family Crypt. He was raising the ancestors of the Agamands and planning to use them against the townsfolk.

Once again I made my way to Agamand Mills. The Crypts were located deep in the mills, and were far too dangerous for me to handle it alone. Luckily I came across Zazu the Forsaken Mage, who was also entrusted with the same task as I was.

We regrouped just outside the crypts, and started going down the stairs. The banshees and zombies were lurking on every corner. Often standing right next to each other, so just descending one level was hard enough. It was this time that I, as Gallow, have experienced what everyone must go through.
I died.

After running back to our corpses and dealing with respawns, we finally reached the final chambers of the crypt. There he was, Captain Dargol. He looked rather small in the large chamber housing him.

Following Dargol’s fall, we headed back to Brill. The town was finally free of its Undead enemies; both the Gnolls and the Agamand family – puppets to their Scourge masters – were a threat no longer.
The only remaining threat to Brill were the Scarlet Crusade. And something was telling me that eliminating them completely would be no simple task…

I may have halted the Scourge problem of Tirisfal Glades, but the human threat was still lingering. In the https://classic.wowhead.com/item=2885/s ... -documents I’d recovered from the scarlet camp back in Deathknell, I learned that the Scarlet Crusade has assigned Captain Perrine and a brigade to the ruined tower southwest of Brill. The tower was no longer functional, but it was still serving as a recuperation zone for the scarlet zealots and missionaries. Even Varimathras, the lieutenant to the Dark Lady, was personally interested in this old watchtower, as its close proximity to the Undercity tunnels was an issue. The Scarlet Crusade is a fanatical religious sect that evolved from the Knights of the Silver Hand, dedicated to the eradication of the undead from Lordaeron. A major adversary of the Forsaken and Scourge, their name has become synonymous with corruption and extremism, and several quests in Tirisfal Glades involve attacks on Scarlet Crusade troops, leaders, and strongholds.

Say no more, Varimathras.
After dealing with Captain Perrine and his gang, I headed back to Brill once again. Now would be a good time to evaluate the current situation, so I grabbed some maps from the town hall and prepared the following.

Current victories against the Scarlet Crusade
The Scarlet Crusade has a total of 5 outposts and one spy camp in Tirisfal Glades. The one in Deatknell, the spy camp, was gathering information on the two nearby Forsaken settlements; Deathknell and Brill. They were undermanned and weak, yet the information they have gathered was serious enough to warrant a swift action, so we have dealt with them in Chapter #1. I’ve marked this with a small skull near Deathknell.
The first stronghold, Crusader’s Outpost, was located towards the north of Solliden Farmstead. This outpost was fortified with Scarlet Warriors, and the guard tower overlooking the Great Sea meant that this location would have to be destroyed as well. Remixt the Forsaken Mage and I took upon this dangerous task, and have culled the entire Scarlet forces in Chapter #2. I’ve marked this with a small skull just above the Solliden Farmstead.
The ruined watchtower just near the Undercity tunnels was also crippled, which again was marked with a small skull on the map, just next to Undercity. However there were still 2 more outposts, and… the Scarlet Monastery.

The road leading to the Monastery
I had heard rumors about the Monastery before, yet I’d not dared venture close. The townsfolk at Brill never liked talking about this place. Any questions regarding the monstery would be met with an awkward silence. All the hearsay would only make more more interested, but somehow I never even made it to the torches lighting up the slope. There was this constant feeling of uneasiness that I couldn’t shake off. Simply bone-chilling.
Instead, I focused on the two remaining smaller outposts; one towards the south of Scarlet Monastery, and the other one just to its west. I went after Captain Vachon to the south first.

Nothing was too out of the ordinary, except for a treasure chest. In it it had some stale bread and water, as well a couple of fishes and some linen cloth. The fish was surprisingly still good. Captain Vanchon tasted better, however. I figured that the Scarlets had caught some fish from the nearby lake, so after dealing with the remainder of friars I went to check the lake. The sun was already setting.

Code: Select all
Ensanguining the skies
How heavily it dies
Into the west away;
Past touch and sight and sound
Not further to be found,
How hopeless under ground
Falls the remorseful day.

Cmon…. Jump! Gah….
I really needed to buy some fishing rods. Perhaps I should pay a visit to the Undercity sometime. I hear they have a fishing trainer there even.
Yet this was not the time! The final remaining scarlet outpost was still there, so Executor Zygand had one final quest for me; assassinating Captain Melrache and his bodyguards. Past Faol’s Rest and next to the Scarlet Monastery, this outpost would be by far the deadliest one.

The way to the outpost was crawling with the Scarlets. After getting ambushed and fighting my way slowly towards the ruined tower, I was able find and kill one of Melrache’s bodyguards. However Melrache himself was nowhere to be seen. Was he hiding? Was he on a patrol?

Oh Shit…
Stay back! STAY BACK!

FUCK!
Damn you!!! Sigh.. at least the graveyard was close.

Round 2…
I enjoyed ripping his heart out this time around. I even ate him even though I wasn’t hungry. That would teach the other Scarlets never to mess with Gallow. That’s right you Scarlet scum, run away from me. Run to your friends! SEE IF THEY CAN DO ANYTHING FOR YOU! HA-HAH-HA-HAHA! POWER TO THE FORSAKEN! ALL HAIL THE FORS….. Uh oh…

Oh Shit… Round 2…
Well this time the graveyard was literally next to my corpse. Carefully I went back and looted my stolen items, and ran back to Brill to report on my flawless victory.
It was time to update my map. So I sat down on one of the tables in the townhall, pulled out my pen and ink, and updated it.

The Scarlet Crusaders had lost all their outposts in Tirisfal Glades. A huge victory for the Forsaken.
Only the Scarlet Monastery remained. I swore that I would one day return to that place. But for now, Brill was finally safe.

In Brill, Apothecary Johaan of the <Royal Apothecary Society> had asked me to deliver his findings to Sepulcher; a makeshift base of operations located in Silverpine Forest. Johaan was working on a new plague to wipe out the Scourge in Tirisfal Glades, and wanted to share what he had learned so far with the surrounding areas.
After consulting with others in Gallow’s End Tavern, I learned that the road to Sepulcher was notoriously dangerous. Rabid wolves and bears were roaming freely too close to the road. There were even rumors of something called the Worgen; half human half wolf creatures. Even though Deathguards were patrolling the woods, misadventures were common for the weary traveler.
So in order to prepare for the journey ahead, I headed to Undercity to learn how to fish and cook. As expected, the green slimy waters of the Undercity canals did not yield me with any useful fish so I went to a lake just north-west of Brill. There I caught a few dozen fish and cooked them real nice. They tasted a bit better than conjured food. I was grateful for that.

I also learned how to mine ores and minerals, hoping to sell them in exchange for more silver. Money was certainly becoming an issue far quicker than I thought. Eager to carry more loot however, I did buy some bags with my final silver, and made my way to Silverpine Forest.

I was greeted by the evergreen pine trees, stretched out as far as the eye can see. The atmosphere was grim and dark, not much different than Tirisfal Glades. The road was paved with flattened limestone with weed growing out of its cracks. From the looks of it this used to be an old trade route. I was told to stick with this path, heading south until it branches to the west. That’s where Sepulcher would be.
Something else caught the corner my eye. To the right and next to the hills, two forsaken corpses were lying not far from each other. A wolf was roaming further down.

Just south of Undercity and to my left was a lake; unsurprisingly occupied by Murlocs. There was also a keep on an island. I wondered about the unspoiled loot that one could find there, however I was just done fishing and I did not want to provoke Murlocs with so many fish in my bags. That would be like killing tons of gnomes and carrying their puny little heads on my belt… and just casually walking to Gnomeregan.

Against my better judgement I went near the wolves to the right. I was moving away from the main road, but I tried keeping track of where I was in order to not get lost. Plus, the hills had numerous copper mines for me to gather, and I could use the wolf meat to cook some food. After killing half a dozen or so wolves, I stumbled upon a cabin. It looked empty at first.

Something was not right. Someone, or something was living here. The hearth was still on, and there were bits of freshly cut wolf meat on the table. I should have known better than going into an empty cabin in the woods! I quickly went back to the road and called for some backup.

We cleared some wolves and secured the perimeter around the shack. A forsaken named Erland appeared. He was hiding behind the shack; timid in movement. He needed our aid to get past the hungry wolves. He urgently needed to report to his teammate Rane located in a nearby farmhouse.

We gathered few more forsaken, and started to escort Erland. Much to our dismay, Erland appeared far too eager to attack any wolf in sight. His fool’s courage almost got us into trouble, but it was nothing we couldn’t manage. We did get some silver for our troubles, so I guess the fool was at least an honest fool.
It was starting to get dark already, and I really did not want to be out in the forest in the middle of the night. The farmhouse was nice and all, but the nearby scourge and the lack of a door did not actually spell out WELCOME… I decided to head for Sepulcher.
Thanks to Erland and his antics, I had already lost where the main road was, so I went further west closer to the sea, hoping to find a pathway leading to Sepulcher. I instead stumbled upon an abandoned mine. It was teeming with spiders, and this was definitely not the correct way. A kind priest told me to back and head south afterwards.

After trekking over some hills and getting fending off some bears, I saw a farmhouse in the distance. Was this Sepulcher?

It most certainly wasn’t. The farm was overrun by undead gnolls! I hoped that the death of Maggot Eye would prevent the gnoll issue, or at the very least slow their advances. It seemed that Maggot Eye’s fate had no influence here. As much as I wanted to intervene, I was running out of food and the moon was slowly starting to rise. I needed to find Sepulcher.
It was at this moment. A growl, no, a howl. What was left of my blood froze in my veins, and I felt a shiver down my Forsaken-spine. Trying to stay downwind, I peeked around a large tree.

Standing hunched over, the creature was sniffing the air, possibly looking for a prey. Sharp claws, a thick mane, and a terrible… terrible smell. So it was true. The Worgen actually did exist.
I slowly circled around the pit, moving cautiously not to make any noise. Luckily the beast was too preoccupied to notice me. After a while I came to an opening and managed to spot the bathandler. I had finally arrived at Sepulcher.

Halmish, warning Brann Bronzebeard about Silverpine Forest
Halmish was right about warning Brann Bronzebeard about Silverpine Forest. The worgen did exist, that much was certain.Yeh don’ wanna go into that place, master dwarf. Once, the Alliance protected Silverpine Forest and it was verdant and natural. Now, the place is a ghost. Forsaken haunt the trees and mists cloak the ground. Them wizards from Dalaran… they sometimes go inta the forest. ‘Researching the undead plague,’ they tells me. Fools! There be worse things than Forsaken in those woods. The forest is cursed. I don’ mean it’s plague-ridden or there’s poison in the air or anythin’! I mean there’s a curse. And it’s got nothin’ to do with the Scourge! A curse that changes yeh… men, and dwarves, they turn inta… beasts.
After my heart-stopping encounter in the woods, I wanted to learn more about the worgen. It seemed that some Forsaken were already investigating their origins. Word around Sepulcher was that the worgen were summoned by human wizards from a different dimension. By Dalaran wizards, to be precise. All too powerful for their own good, using magic that they barely understand, and messing it up for the rest of us…
I never really cared much for magic – dark or otherwise.

The Forsaken had Deathstalkers patrolling the woods, but their numbers were dwindling. If we wanted to stop the worgen invasion, we had to go to the core of the problem; Arugal.
He was residing in Shadowfang Keep; a stronghold constructed before the War.

Before heading straight to him however, I needed to make sure that the village just south of it was cleared out. Reports mentioned that this Pyrewood Village was supplying the keep with vital reinforcements; food, water and weaponry. So I went south, not really knowing what to expect. Lucky for me, things did not go south. There were already some Forsaken around. We formed a party and started making our way in deep into the village.

In the town hall a Deathstalker was hiding in the shadows, patiently waiting for the worgen council to adjorn their meeting. The Council was Arugal’s puppet; doing anything they are being told without question. As a Forsaken I could appreciate that. But the Deathstalker had other ideas.

After ambushing the townsfolk, we searched for valuables and artifacts in the nearby homes. Some of them were hidden by some bookshelves, which took our group quite some time to find.

The battle was long and hard, so we rested inside the house for a while. The wind was blowing restlessly outside, and the dead of the night was slowly approaching. One of our party members had spotted a large worgen pack returning from hunt, so our rest had to be cut short. According to him, even with our combined strength we would be outnumbered. We voted to go back to Sepulcher. Unsurprising to noone, the newly arrived worgen pack did not take the fact that we murdered and pillaged their entire village lightly.

I reported our victory to Sepulcher, and took the bat ride back to Undercity. There was a Forsaken interested in my findings; Keeper Bel’dugur. After learning about our intention to raid Shadowfang Keep, he asked me to bring back https://classic.wowhead.com/item=6283/the-book-of-ur. Evidently this whole Worgen Curse started with this book, so it would be wise to learn from others’ mistakes. I agreed.
I gathered few members from our guild (concidentally the same 3 members from our Ragefire Chasm adventure!), and we entered the keep. We fought waves of worgen, banshees, undead. The keep was indeed well fortified, but our Fuel Rats were well prepared.
We finally came across Arugal’s study room. The air was full of different mixes of potions and rusty iron. There were some books on the shelves, of which one was the Book of Ur. Standing next to dozens of cobwebbed books, this one was in relatively good shape. I slowly started turning its pages, all intact.

Arugal was a fool not to have listened his master. An arrogant fool, but a powerful one nonetheless. It was time to take Shadowfang Keep back, so we pressed forward. The land of Azeroth is host to no end of wonders. Flora, fauna, cultures and magic all teem across its surface. Indeed, the curious will find limitless variety on this world. One merely has to look. But if one looks deeply enough then windows to entire new worlds are found, and each world is home to its own wonders.
Just as each is home to its own horrors. This is the purpose of my book: to catalogue those beings, those otherworldly fiends who would destroy our lands, so that explorers who happen upon them will know what they face. So if you consider yourself a guardian of Azeroth, then read on. And know your enemy.
The fiend of which I write is the worgen. Old, rural folklore may hearken to these creatures, for what farmer’s child has not heard tales of beastly wolf-men stalking the woods and marshes outside his village?
And truth may hide in such tales–perhaps they are warnings against the worgen, veiled as myths to frighten us. But before such tales are dismissed, let me now assure the reader: worgen are real. They may not be from our world, but avenues exist between their home and ours and powerful magics can pull them here. Such chants are best left unuttered, for wherever Worgen tread, they bring terror and bloodshed with them.
You will know a worgen by its resemblance to the wolves of our world. When viewing a worgen one can easily see how its coarse hair, pointed ears and long snout are akin to the wolves we know.
But you will just as quickly see its differences: that coarse hair surrounds a powerful, two-legged body sporting long fangs and dagger-like claws. And behind its howl lurks a malevolence possessed by no natural beast.
The worgens’ home is a dark place, a place of nightmare. If that world fosters locales safe from the cursed worgen, then my research has revealed no such bastions. And if one considers the ferocity and wickedness of the worgen, then it is likely no such bastions exist.
It is surmised that the worgen are content to remain on their world, for although some worgen possess powerful magic, they have made no attempts to reach Azeroth on their own accord. And for this, we are fortunate.
As mentioned above, some worgen are skilled in mystic arts, and their magic is of darkness and corruption. Curses and supernatural poisons are common, so be forewarned–those who face worgen magicians should arm themselves with wards against shadow.
It is my hope that no Dalaran wizard seeks out the Worgen, even if done in light conscience. For no pact may be struck, no secrets may be learned, no good can come from these beasts.
They are best left to their world. For if found in ours and not destroyed, then our peril will be dire…

We even found some impressive loot…

As we stood by the doors of Arugal, killing his final guardians – or Son of Arugal as they were called, I could not help but pity him. There he was, standing alone in his doomed keep. Haunted by his own actions. It was said that he went mad after using the Book of Ur to summon the worgen; after all they were ferocious beasts who slaughtered anyone but him. Perhaps he simply wanted to protect his people, and thought that summoning aid through other dimensions would be a bright idea. Actually, I’m sure he thought that.

Yet it had all failed. Miserably. Dalaran fell during the War, and the worgen did nothing to help. If anything, they hastened the process. For that Arugal was cast away; day by day, week by week, he went further with his research to prove that he was right. To prove that the worgen could be used. Alas that day never came. And here we were, making sure that that day would never come. Farewell, Archmage Arugal. I will make sure that your mistakes are not repeated ever again.

Keeper Bel’dugur, upon returning him the book
Very good. This book will add nicely to my collections of the workings of Ur. His knowledge was great, but his conscience held him from true power. And so when the Scourge came and his strength was tested, it failed.
We of the Forsaken cannot afford such weakness, if we are to survive…
…If we are to conquer.

Few weeks after our final blow to Arugal, I noticed the diminishing worgen population in Silverpine Forest. According to some reports, they were taking refuge beyond Greymane Wall; in a large peninsula named Gilneas. Some forsaken disputed this however, saying that Gilneas has not been allowing anyone in or out since the Second War, and the Greymane Wall was shut down for good.
By this time I knew well enough not to trust either reports fully, so I went to check it myself. Despite its age, the great wall looked well maintained. Furthermore it was closed shut with no guards to be seen on either side. Some hostile alliance were taking refuge just outside of the gate, but for the rest the area was eventless. There was no sign of anyone going in or out, not anytime soon at least.
The Sepulcher had one less enemy perhaps, but it was by no means safe. The risen gnolls were harassing the weakened forsaken.
To put an end to gnolls in Silverpine, High Executor Hadrec sent me the small farm just north of Sepulcher. I had stumbled upon this farm on my way to Sepulcher, so I knew where to find it easily.

The farm was haunted by a banshee named Nightlash, which would only appear if we angered her enough. With the help of few strangers, we started massacring the gnolls to draw Nightlash’s attention. She died faster than she appeared.
Next, I went to Decrepit Ferry. Hadrec believed that the scourge invasion in Silverpine had originally arrived from the lonely island on the lake; Fenris Island. I went east to find any clues. After carefully making my way to the ferry, I came across a pile of wrapped corpses.

A hand of a young woman protruded among the corpses, bearing the marks of a plague yet still relatively fresh. A golden ring was on her finger, with the following engraving:
“For Deliah”
Back in Sepulcher, Hadrec seemed preoccupied. He believed that this body was stolen from the mass graves in Tirisfal! The gnolls were taking the corpses to the island! We had to go to this island, and eradicate the gnolls once and for all!
Yet, at the same time… what should I do with this ring? Toss it back to the pile of corpses? Sell it for few silver? No… This had belonged to someone. Perhaps Magistrate Sevren back in Brill would have records of the recent deaths. Perhaps he knew who Deliah was. Would her husband care for a sentiment back from.. when they were humans? I did not know. I headed back to Brill to find out.
Back in Brill, not much had changed. Now that the pressure from gnolls, undead and the scarlet fanatics had died down, the forsaken seemed a bit more relieved. I headed in the Town Hall and checked with Sevren.

Sevren checked the records, and was able to find a Deliah. Recently deceased. Cause of death: Unknown. Her husband, Raleigh, was living in Undercity.

Standing next to a cooking fire, Raleigh looked at me expressionlessly.
The official records said that the cause of death was unknown. Yet Raleigh knew that she was murdered at the hands of his once good friend; Valdred. Why Raleigh choose not to disclose this in her death report, I did not know. Something in his eyes was warning me not to ask any further questions. So I didn’t. Raleigh asked for me to kill Valdred and bring his hands.“Yes, this ring was my wife’s. Her fate was the fate of all who fail to endure these harsh times. I feel nothing for her death, nor for the story you tell of her body’s abduction.
Such feelings have long since grown cold within me. But desire does still burn in my dead heart, Gallow.
Desire for revenge.”
- Raleigh
Valdred was last seen trying to flee into Gilneas. He probably didn’t know that the gates were sealed. The fool. He didn’t even fight back when I approached him, perhaps he knew his fate was already sealed. Rather than live with shame, he opted for the mercy of my blade. I admired that.
I felt sorry for Raleigh as I took back the ring I gave him. He seemed more interested in examining the pair of bloody hands than the ring he once gave to his wife. As I took the bat ride back to Sepulcher, I wondered how the relationship between these three people came to this point.“Here, take the ring you returned earlier. Deliah has been dead to me for so long, her ring is a bauble I no longer care to keep. Instead, I will keep these hands as a remembrance of my friend’s betrayal.”
- Raleigh upon returning Valdred’s hands
Back in Sepulcher the preparations for the assault on Fenris Island was finally over. The study on the rot hide gnolls had revealed that they were created by a mage called Thule Ravenclaw. He was residing on the fortified keep on the island; surrounded by the hordes of gnolls doing his bidding.
Hadrec had thankfully prepared some sharpening stones and armor kits for me. I crafted some bandages, placed few potions on my belt, and cooked the wolf meat I collected earlier, and went to the island.
The assault had already began. Members of the horde were already attacking the gnolls on the gnolls outside of the walls. After grouping up with them, we went into the keep and made our way to upstairs.

Thule was standing in the final room, full of bodyguards. After some pretty close calls with several of our members, we killed Thule and separated his head from his body.
Speaking of severed heads, we found another one in one of the gnolls and … [/i] – what the hell?![/i] This head was talking! Somewhat intrigued (and frightened), I asked the head what in the bloody hell he was. His name was Alaric, once Thule’s head servant (heh) and bodyguard, he was beheaded by him and given to the gnolls as a plaything!

Trying to suppress my laughter, I asked if there was anything we could do for this head. He wanted to be buried next to his body; an unmarked grave here in Fenris Keep. The head was grateful for finally being reunited with his body, and told us a secret hiding place back in the keep.

Thule was keeping a special magic wand, woven together from the apprentice wands each mage possessed. The gnolls were not clever enough to make use of a magic wand, but I didn’t want to risk it so we went back inside and found the wand. I was sure someone in Undercity would be very interested in this.
Upon returning Thule’s head to Hadrec, he presented me with an option to choose between a crappy dress and a crappy sword. I went with the sword.
My time in Silverpine Forest was coming to an end. The worgen and gnoll threats were eliminated, and my help was surely needed elsewhere. I was told to follow the road to Hillsbrad Foothills. I remembered that place back when I was… a human. It was a nice and peaceful, quiet farmland. I wondered if it was still the same.

During my journey in Tirisfal Glades, one thing really struck with me. The world out there was grim, drab and lonely. Danger was just waiting around the corner; creatures made out of flesh and bone, apparitions that chill you to your core, diseased beasts lurking in the shadows, and more.
Yet whenever I was adventuring together with other fellow forsaken, it not only made me feel safer, but it also gave me a sense of… belonging. I wanted to help out others the same way. Not in exchange of gold or glory, but just for the sake of helping them. Make them feel… belonged. Surely, I wasn’t alone in thinking this.
So I went to Undercity, the fallen Kingdom of Lordaeron. The city had fallen to the plague some time ago, and with its citizens gone, the Forsaken had claimed it as their own.
After getting lost in its intertwined elevators and tunnels, I found the Guild Master. Merely salvaging a grand total of 10 silver, I bought a Guild Charter.

In order to register a guild, Christopher the Guild Master needed 9 other signatures. Few people had already shown interest in the guild, but not enough to register the charter. So I went back to Deathknell.

Desperate times call for desperate measures...
I finally had enough signatures. So I headed back, and handed the scroll back to Christopher.
<Goblin Rocket Fuel Rats> was founded.

Beneath the city of Orgrimmar lies this fiery chasm. Recently, a clan of troggs known as Ragefire Troggs have begun to appear in the chasm, from deep below the lava-filled tunnels. Magatha Grimtotem, of the tauren people, attempted to make peace with these creatures, but was met only with hostility. It was clear that these troggs were not interested in diplomacy, and could potentially overwhelm the entire Horde if left unchecked.
A sect of the mysterious Shadow Council has also taken refuge in this chasm. This sect is known as the Searing Blade, and is led by Taragaman the Hungerer, a felguard; Jergosh the Invoker, a powerful warlock; and Bazzalan, a satyr. From their dark hiding place, they plot to overthrow and destroy all that the Horde has built for themselves in these lands.

Once at Durotar, I asked a nearby guard for the location of their capital city. The Orc guard did not seem all too enthusiastic to be talking to a Forsaken, but nevertheless complied with my request.

This was my first time in Orgrimmar, and I must admit the city was quite impressive. The Orcs did not really have an eye for aesthetics, but their reinforced walls were more than enough to get the job done. The horde banners and spiked barricades were everywhere to be found, and their guards were armed with heavy melee weapons. I wasn’t sure why my help would be needed in this Ragefire Chasm, but I was simply answering a call; I didn’t linger on it.

After grabbing the flight path, I made my way to Thrall who briefed me about the traitors hiding in Skull Rock; a cave just east of Orgrimmar. Before heading down to find out more information on these traitors however, I first wanted to reach the Tauren capital city; Thunder Bluff. Despite my efforts the Wyvern master would not let me fly there directly. That bastard.
So I started running. Thinking back I should have packed lighter; Durotar was hot! After running for what seemed like an eternity, I soaked my sweaty bones in the cold rivers running between Durotar and Barrens. The crocodiles on either side were not too interested in me. Something to do with my sweaty bones I figured.

For a while I kept running south as the day became the night. Passing by Crossroads and Camp Taurajo, I stopped by the Tauren settlement to catch my breath and keep myself warm in the surprisingly chilly Barrens night. I had finally reached Mulgore and made my way to Thunder Bluff. The evening was cold but the hospitality of the Tauren made it feel so much warmer. After answering the Tauren’s call to aid in Ragefire Chasm, I spent the night in one of their tents. I could see the stars from the little opening on the top.

The next morning I packed for Durotar again and took the Wyvern taxi from Thunder Bluff to Orgrimmar; it was quite cheap all things considered!
Once there I went straight to Skull Rock to aid Thrall’s quest to find traitors in his ranks.

Bom, Dotalicious and Sinnest were already at the gates of the chasm, waiting for me. I felt bad for making everyone wait, so I used some of my forsaken charm to convince everyone that I was worth the wait.

Things were going pretty great! I was able to hold off the creatures and let my teammates attack them freely. Even equipped with cloth gear, our amazing healer was not complaining about my frail bones getting crushed even more easily. People were focused! We crossed an opening, and were greeted by the hostile Ragefire Troggs.

The tauren had special hatred for these troggs; even Rahauro in Thunder Bluff had asked us to kill a handful of them. He was also wondering the fate of a fellow tauren going by the name of Maur Grimtotem. We made our way through waves of endless troggs, and climbed a little slope by the scorching lava.
The lifeless body of a tauren was lying on the ground, guarded by a larger trogg. Unfortunately Maur hadn’t made it.
The large trogg was not that much of an issue, however we were faced with another boss. Something much, much larger and harder to defeat.

[SERVER] Shutdown in 15:00
We ran and we ran… Barely made to Taragaman with only few minutes to spare. Luckily he went down quickly and we were able to get its heart. We couldn’t get to Jergosh or Bazzalan, but at least Taragaman was dead. Orgrimmar was safe… for now.Sinnest wrote: NOOO

Afterwards, unorganized as it may seem, we even did a little victory pose.

Right after our victory in Ragefire Chasm, I reported to Thunder Bluff about the eradication of the troggs, as well as the fate of Maur Grimtotem. The taurens were delighted to know about the news for troggs, however understandably upset about Maur.
The wind was blowing gently into the silent night. It was a good change of temperature after the lava-filled cave, so I decided to just relax and simply fish. The sound of the bauble bouncing in the water was therapeutic.
There were others in the same area. A young tauren caught the corner of my eye, so I stroke up a conversation.

Mooller of the Tauren, was his name. We just stood side by side for a while, fishing blissfully. He then traded me a shield – out of the blue! It was even looking sturdier than what I was using, so I was grateful for this act of selfishness. I tried to give something back in return, but he was too kind to accept anything.
I then pondered about this random act of kindless. This is exactly the type of person our guild would need! So I asked him, whether he wanted to be a part of us and continue spreading the good vibe.

And that was that! With that, we had just received a new Adventurer. Mooller the Tauren. Welcome to the guild!

In years past, a night elf druid named Naralex discovered a network of underground caverns within the heart of the Barrens. Dubbed the ‘Wailing Caverns’, these natural caves were filled with steam fissures which produced long, mournful wails as they vented.
Naralex believed he could use the caverns’ underground springs to restore lushness and fertility to the Barrens – but to do so would require siphoning the energies of the fabled Emerald Dream.
Once connected to the Dream however, the druid’s vision somehow became a nightmare. Soon the Wailing Caverns began to change – the waters turned foul and the once-docile creatures inside metamorphosed into vicious, deadly predators.
It is said that Naralex himself still resides somewhere inside the heart of the labyrinth, trapped beyond the edges of the Emerald Dream. Even his former acolytes have been corrupted by their master’s waking nightmare – transformed into the wicked Druids of the Fang.

Barrens was still hot during sundown. Equipped with potions, flasks, bandages and various food, we headed west to search for the Wailing Caverns. Soon enough we came across a large cave opening.

On top of the cave in a hidden alcove, were some taurens and night elves gathered around a camp fire. One needed some skins of the various creatures in the caves. I used the camp fire to cook some wolf meat and fish, and we entered the cave.
The air inside was freezing cold. I was sure that few unlucky adventurers looking for a refuge from the sun had met their demise in this very place; as elite monsters roaming around in its shadows were looking for an easy prey. It would not be out of the ordinary for a weary traveler to get ambushed here.
With this in mind, we went deeper and deeper into the cavern. A Disciple of Naralex was inside. He graciously buffed us with Mark of the Wild. He was looking to awaken Naralex from his nightmare, but for this he needed our aid. We had to kill the four Leaders of the Fang first.

We fought with various beasts in the labyrinths of the Wailing Caverns; poisonous vipers, multiplating ectoplasms, raptors with claws sharp as blades, shapeshifting druids and giant shamblers. This place was considerably harder than our previous adventure in Ragefire Chasm.
Yet where there is adversary, there is loot. We were rewarded with many great upgrades.

After a long hour of getting lost, getting loot and getting lost again, we had slain all four leaders. Our final obstacle before awaking Naralex was Verdan the Everliving; a giant bog beast.
You know when they say “Size doesn’t matter?” Well that is a big fat lie, as when it came to this dude, his size DID matter. Caution for future travelers; HE HITS HARD! Bring some potions!

With Verdan out of the way, we jumped through the small tunnel behind him and tracked back to the entrance. The disciple was waiting patiently. After hearing the news of the defeated leaders, he guided us to the chamber of Naralex.

The caverns did NOT want Naralex to be awakened, that was for sure. Soon after the disciple started his awakening magic, monstrous beings started emerging from the depths of the waters! Crocolisks, vipers, ectoplasms… and… IS THAT A GIANT MURLOC? ARGHH I HATE FISH!

Chaotic as it may have been, the giant murloc did not stand a chance against the brave Goblin Rocket Fuel Rats. He even dropped a great https://classic.wowhead.com/item=6627/m ... reastplate for me. How generous!
And with that, the Wailing Caverns was completed. Naralex had finally awoken from his nightmare. Even though the caverns were now empty, I felt as if a presence was still there. I hoped it was benign.
Bonus picture: I’ve met the legend on my way outside.

Sounds like you had a blast! Classic hype!

how much of your levelling are you planning to write about like this? that was cool btw, real flair for making the mundane questing seem like something a bit out of d&d there ahah

A breath of fresh air @Gallow! Well done, I think a lot of people will enjoy reading your adventures through Azeroth. Less min/max more stories/relax!

Oh yeah the hype is unreal, I can tell you that much

All the way from 1 to 60! And once we have the guild going all the adventures from there as well! Not only dungeon runs / raids (which will be glorious), but also the less glorious things such as low level quests, professions, helping out others, fishing etc.
One thing I haven't decided is whether I will "re-write" the levels 15-60 when Classic launches or not (since I'm already planning on writing the 1-15 during the Stress Test). The character will look the same, so I can just keep going after level 15.. open to suggestions heh.
I was a DM for our 3-man d&d group a loooong time ago haha.
Thanks!

#2 The Town of Brill
This story has been added to the Original Post. Leaving it here for quoting purposes.

I had finally arrived at Brill. The town clearly had seen better days; the houses were fairly old and made from wood that was all but rotten. The constant reminder of the Plague that was the mass graves – more than half unmarked. Yet the townsfolk were still adamant. Oft running patrol through the unbarricaded, gloomy meadows, trying to defend Brill from its many foes; both the living and the dead.
The Magistrate of Brill, Sevren, was particularly worried about a recent Gnoll invasion from the north. These good-for-nothing creatures were coming at night and stealing the corpses from the mass graves.

Anyway… This Inn – unsurprisingly called Gallow’s End – housed some regulars who were ready to talk.

Now that is some Forsaken humor I'm always up for :D
Love the story so far! I've been planning to do something similar for my character when the game launches, so I can revisit it later and see, where it all started. And it's always great to read about adventures (or misadventures) of others, especially with screenshots or illustrations.
So keep it going!

#3 The Agamand family
This story has been added to the Original Post. Leaving it here for quoting purposes.

This is all a prologue to the fishing episode...
Great work @Gallow! I never played a lot of undead (compared to the rest) so getting some more in depth look at the lore is actually really cool. My mage alt will be forsaken, so this is hyping me up to level my mage! Love it, hyped for fishing story

You have revealed my master plan... The stories were all just foreshadowing Gallow becoming a master angler!Selexin wrote: ↑5 years agoThis is all a prologue to the fishing episode...

Yeah I love the Forsaken lore a lot! I love how they are not "Hurr we are undead and we hate humans"; they are not black and white. They are actually morally gray (unlike Sylvanas in BFA hah) once you deep dig into their storyline and think for a bit. Sure they are just reanimated corpses, but they were also once human, destroyed by the plague. They share the same hatret against the Scourge just as the alliance does, yet they are hunted by the Scarlet Crusaders because the scarlets do not differentiate between the two. Forsaken have this sense of gloom all over them, full of unsatiable hatred, but also nostalgia to their human lives, yet they know that they can never go back. It's actually quite tragic.

They even have a Youtube channel. Really talented people!

Absolutely agree! Those are some of the reasons why I want to roll a Forsaken character too. On the other hand, there's the emphasis on the concept of free will, that they are not just some mindless Scourge mobs and have been given a second chance - a very gruesome one for sure, but still, some of the Forsaken are trying to make the best of it.
Actually, this can easily become way too offtopic. I should probably stop before the thread about Gallow's adventures turns into an enclave of Forsaken rp'ers

This is so fun and inspiring! I'm loving it!

#4 Dealing with the Scarlet Crusade
This story has been added to the Original Post. Leaving it here for quoting purposes.

Into the west away;

@Gallow, another entertaining post - time to buy a fishing rod while we wait for Classic Launch!

Thanks

So aside from few more screenshots I haven't posted (like running to the border of Silverpine forest), my open stress test experience sadly ended right after Chapter 4. I feel like it would be somewhat cheating to level Gallow on a private server just to continue the story for the sake of frequent posting. Sort of defeats the purpose of "Classic leveling stories". I may however do a filler-arc of Willow (aka Gallow before the plague) as a human character (in a private server), just so people don't forget this

Or some "Lore arcs" but then again with no actual classic ingame I fail to see the point.
The Fishing chapter will therefore come after the Classic launch (probably on first week of September). I'm open to ideas

Edit: Also, ding lvl 20!

That's actually brilliant, do it!
We are all waiting with baited breaths

omg that was horrible and you should feel bad
anyways, gallow, just sat down to read up on the rest of your adventures, love it. would be pretty cool to see the human story as well while we wait, since theres 2 months yet til launch im eager for content :D

Some mini-updates!
- All the stories can now be found on the main post!
- I tried writing a "backstory of Gallow as a human" story, but I just couldn't find the inspiration for it. It became forced and just "writing for the sake of writing". Sorry. The story will continue after Classic launch!
- There is still 44 more days till Classic launches so I'm twiddling my thumbs here, so I tidied up the stories and did some grammar / spelling updates. That being said I'm not a native speaker so please let me know if you have any corrections!
- Shameless guild advertisement: <Goblin Rocket Fuel Rats> has 18 members now, such awesome people. Things are still on the quiet side since the game hasn't even launched yet, but those who are interested (and are going to be playing on Oceanic/PvP/Horde) are certainly welcome!

Story Arc #2, [???]
Tirisfal Glades was finally safe. Before heading out to Undercity to buy myself a fishing rod, I had one important decision to make.
Code: Select all
For Chapter #5, Gallow should go to...
Silverpine Forest (Eastern Kingdoms)
Barrens (Kalimdor)
http://poll.fm/66dvt
(which will be after Classic launches)
For our alliance readers, here is a little cheat-sheet for both zones:
Silverpine Forest
- Is very spooky. Similar to Duskwood!
- Continues the forsaken lore.
- Great lore regarding the plague.
- Has Greymane Wall, but it is closed during vanilla.
- Has ties to Dalaran (old).
- Has plenty of werewolves and murlocks, diseased wildlife, as well as elite open world dungeons, plus the dungeon of Shadowfang Keep that is cursed by Arugal.
- The largest and most popular leveling zone for Horde.
- Good lore on orcs/trolls/tauren.
- Has Barrens Chat!
- Some pirate shenanigans.
- Has a good deal of mob variety (raptors, lions, plainstriders, centaurs etc), as well as iconic quests (Mankrik's wife, Chen's Keg, etc).
- A good change of scenery, very iconic open.... barrens.
- Houses the Wailing Caverns, which I will be visiting regardless of chapter.

Just wanted to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed your writing and will continue to tune in. I just leveled my first undead character on a private server and your stories really brought everything to life a bit more. A true pleasure!
