Layering effects every part of your game experience, because that's exactly what you want.
True. It does affect every part of my experience.

You yearn for layering and the abuse. It's what drives you to post here, it's what makes you.... You. Despite all of your posts pre and post launch going against layering, your the first person to abuse and ultimately enjoy the result of it. You don't want layering gone, because you are willing to abuse it to gain your advantage. Layering is the best thing that's ever happened to you. Ironic really.
Huh? I hate layering. But this is a competitive game and thus I will use it to my advantage. Layering is the worst thing that happened to Classic. Its awful really. But its part of the game. Just because you abuse an awful system that is part of the game, doesnt mean that you agree with it. Its part of the game. Sooooo a new meta forms and the best players will conform to that meta in an effort to stay competitive.

It can be a competitive game, that's true, but I don't think that is a blanket statement for the entire game and the entire community.

Like I said, you want to abuse layering because you believe that is what you need to do to get the most out of your experience. I think you're in a relatively small niche with this, but that's where you want to be.

Doesn't change the fact that it is abuse and it is punishable.
No system is perfect, and of course it's Blizzard's fault as well for not testing it thoroughly to minimize abuse, but "trying to stay competitive" doesn't excuse anyone for abusing it.

Again, no system is perfect; and just like, for example, money laundering, you will get what's coming for you, if you get caught.

No, I need to use layering to be at an equal footing to the other players at the top of the pile. Layering destroys my experience.

Just as I hate LFR/LFG, but I need to use that function in retail to remain competitive. Layering is a system in the game, an important one, that must be leveraged to maintain an equal playing field.

Is it though? They didnt ban anyone who used it for gathering. They only put down their foot when this was used in instances. And of all the people I know who used it in instances, none have been banned. At this point it just seems like they gave everyone some lip service to make them feel okay with the current condition of the game.

For sure. The issue here is that this abuse was outlined on the day Blizz announced layering. This was displayed during the stress tests and the beta. This was addressed by Blizzard who ensured they had a strategy to deal with it, and layering was implemented with no anti-abuse functionality.

Will people be punished? I doubt it. I think the most serious offenders will be/were punished. I think they probably punished a very small percentage of the guys who abused layering within dungeons, and outside of that, no one was banned. I think that we have already seen the ban wave, which essentially consists of 2 screenshots that are circulating that probably represents around 1-200 bans at most (bogus number and my assumption). If anything, Blizz has approved layering abuse outside of instances and their punitive reaction to instance farming has been questionable at best.

Update: earlier today another guy from my guild was banned - for buying gold. 30 day suspension. Still nothing from anyone I have talked to about the guys who abused layering in dungeons. So far I am aware of two bans in Classic. To be clear here, having an early 60, likely means you are assigned to a raid team. People notice when you stop logging on. At this point, most/all 60s are being tracked by their guilds and if one stops showing up, it is noted. Yet no one has stopped showing up. No one has been banned. Layering was abused HEAVILY on Fairbanks.
