PvP Frost Mage Best Arena Comps

wotlk pvp frost mage best arena comps

Your Arena Team’s Comp (short for “Composition”, also known as “Setup”, meaning the classes of your team’s members) plays a very big role in whether you’re victorious, or you struggle to win games. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that some comps are simply better than others, and some just won’t work — you won’t get very far in a 2v2 arena team comprised of 2 healers, for example.

This guide lists some of the strongest comps for a Frost Mage in Wrath of the Lich King, in both the 2v2 and 3v3 formats. We will additionally rank these comps based on how powerful they are, but remember that a good player can still succeed with a weaker comp.

Comps listed as “Best” will generally perform very well and are considered viable at high ratings. “Good” comps can compete at high ratings, but they may require more effort and better communication in order to succeed. “Decent” comps can definitely win games, but they struggle versus stronger comps.

Overview

Frost Mage has always been the preferred PvP specialization since the release of WoW Vanilla, coming with powerful burst capabilities and tons of crowd control and mobility. However, their kit relies on fast reactions, kiting, and crowd control, since they are quite squishy despite all the defensive tools available at their disposal; this is mainly because Frost Mages use cloth.

The mentality you should adopt in the arenas really just depends on what type of a comp you find yourself in — each comp will present itself as a slight alteration to your playstyle. The general approach is that you will want to kite as much as possible while setting up potential kills.

Frost Mage/Rogue

When being partnered up with a Rogue, you will generally want to crowd control a target while completely destroying the other one. This can be achieved by a combination of Sap, Polymorph, Frost Nova, Deep Freeze, Blind, Gouge, and Kidney Shot. Even if most of the crowd control comes from the Rogue, you will initially find yourself spamming Polymorph until DR makes them immune to it after Sap expires.

The whole idea behind the comp is that you will be squishy, but you will still have enough crowd control to deal with the comps like Arms Warrior/Holy Paladin. Both you and your partner have powerful burst capacity here and, as a Frost Mage, your main objective is to set up the perfect kill.

Frost Mage/Healer

With a healer such as a Discipline Priest, you have two possible choices: you can crowd control either the DPS or the Healer, with the crowd-controlled target changing the whole match-up.

Here is what we mean by that: if you choose to crowd control the DPS, you will want to focus as much as possible on pressuring the healer, while your Priest is spamming Mana Burn on their healer.

If you choose to crowd control the Healer, you will want to attempt to kill the DPS as fast as possible, even going as far as using Cold Snap offensively and asking your Priest to spam offensive abilities. Remember: you can keep a target permanently slowed if you are playing properly!
