What Comes After WotLK Classic to be Determined by the Community

what comes after wotlk classic to be determined by the community

During an interview between Asmongold and Ion Hazzikostas the question came up around what could come next after WotLK Classic finishes out it’s content phases and reaches the end of the expansion.

Ion was up front that Blizzard is really looking to the community to provide helpful recommendations around what they would like to see and that everything is on the table. We’ve added a transcript below of the relevant part of the interview.

Asmongold:
Next thing I was wondering about is the uh, what do you think is going to happen now Wrath of the Lich King Classic is coming out. Obvious Wrath of the Lich King is going to run its course, then what?

Ion:
Um, yes at this point I’d love to hear from you, from the community as a whole, what you want to come next. We have a playerbase that really has made Classic their home and the people who have carried their characters forward from Classic into Burning Crusade and likely into Wrath beyond that. And when that comes to an end, when you defeat the Lich King, or sorry when you actually kill Halion the ultimate end boss in Wrath of the Lich King.

Do you want to start over, do you want to try a different version of that, do you want to carry that character forward into a new adventure. I know Cataclysm, for many people was like “ah that’s the beginning of the end and I’m out”.

Asmongold:
It was a world revamp yeah.

Ion:
I’d ask like, an interesting question is maybe: what is it about Cataclysm you don’t like. Was it the heroic dungeons, was Firelands a bad raid, is Twilight Highlands a bad zone? Is that the problem or was it, I don’t know, LFR and dungeon finder from the start and removing group quests from the world or whatever else or compressing the talent trees.

What would it look like if you had Cata content with some changes? Lots of stuff is on the table, we really welcome that discussion now that the fact were doing Wrath is no longer the world’s worst kept secret.

A new expansion branching from WOTLK keeping the classic theme going, inclusive of input from the wow classic players with reference to content and ideas. Would this bring people back, I like to think so. 😎

I’d like to see the story branch out on it’s own, keeping the wotlk systems in place. Take a page out of Old School Runescape and make sure the new content is what the community wants and is in line with the reasons people play classic over retail.

I think the talent tree in retail mess things up I like the barber the flying is awesome I like where you do a quest and you finish it on the field another one just pop up like a chain quest you don’t have to return it to an npc all the way in town the talent tree in classic is the best you make your own decisions we play the same class but we have different build you get to play with your talents and make it your own also like the covenant getting op skill is always a good thing

Agreed. I’d love to see them take that same approach and move away from full expansions and instead drop regular raid content, dungeon content, and some new zones and such. I’d much rather them drop a really inspired raid every 6-9 months along with a couple of dungeons that support the story development of the raid and maybe a new zone with quests that go along with that. If I could be guaranteed stuff like that on a reasonable schedule, it would be much easier to stay subbed rather than play my d*ck off for a month or two, get to a good place in the game, and bounce until something interesting comes out. There have been times I’ve wanted to go back to SL, but the systems in place are always so boring to work through again and again. I can appreciate OSRS’s approach to things where the game itself doesn’t radically change every so often with awful systems but instead fleshed out chunks of the game that add content, challenges, and so forth. Games like Lost Ark prove that there is still a hungry base of players looking to play an MMO; it just has to be worth their time.

Well they flat removed LFD listening to a small crossection of people instead of sending all there wow classic regulars a survey.. they only want to know how to milk the cow harder.. cata happens it time most of us return to retail or jump back to priv servers.
