In a move that largely caught everyone off-guard, Blizzard announced that Season of Mastery phase 2 will be starting on December 16 — in just 2 days from now!

With Dire Maul already being unlocked from the start on SoM servers, the only new content that players are getting access to are the Lord Kazzak and Azuregos world bosses. Those are certainly nothing to scoff at though – fury warriors will be thrilled to have a chance at the Empyrean Demolisher, one of the strongest weapons in the game. Meanwhile hunters and priests will have an easier time completing their level 60 class quests by having an 100% drop chance on the Mature Blue Dragon Sinew and The Eye of Shadow respectively.

This move is somewhat surprising as SoM servers will have been up for barely 29 days when phase 2 is released, over twice as fast as it originally was released in Classic. However, it does seem to work out fairly well given the rumours of TBC phase 3 coming in early to mid January, as it would give SoM players ample time to take down the world bosses before going back to TBC for the new content there. This very likely played a role in Blizzard’s decision to release SoM phase 2 so soon.

What are your thoughts on this news? Do you think Blizzard is releasing phase 2 too early, or are you happy for the chance to experience it now, before TBC phase 3 arrives? Let us know in the comments below!
